It has a lot of what makes good battles work. Ash's opponent came in with a specific game plan to punish him and Ash needs to figure out a way through it, both trainers switch Pokemon quite often to do counterplays, and they don't take half the episode before they reach the battle or drag it down with an excessive number of cutaways.
Aside from that I mostly agree, the biggest problem isn't even necessarily the battles are written poorly, it's that so many of them in JN have been restricted to 1v1 or 2v2 and even worse, only take like half an episode and there's no time to flesh out the battle at all. We had Ash vs Bea and getting past the sakuga, it was often just frustrating because Ash kept rolling a 1 on his INT checks anytime Octolock was involved.
