It gives statistically better bulk that dividing the EVs between the defenses, it's not just for leftovers recovery. Pokemon like Blissey or Lanturn, who have far higher HP than defenses, are an exception though.

Discounting any new pokes that may have outrageously high attack, if Mawile keeps its base 85 attack that will put it at base 170 with huge power. That is the second highest attack in the game, and it QUICKLY surpasses Deoxys-A.

The reason you should max attack on Huge/Pure Power mons is that every stat point invested into attack is worth double the others, as the ability doubles the boosts gained from them. If you want to get the maximum "value" from your investments, you'll put them into the boosted stat as it's buy one get one free. This is the same reason why you should usually use a nature to boost the pokemon's raw stat that will be highest at the end of EV training.

With huge power, Evs are getting double, so to get maximum investment, you max attack EVs, because you get 2 per 4 EV points, not 1.

It doesn't matter "how strong" it is before EVs, because that is still weak as shit, it matters how powerful it is after EVs and IVs, because that is super fucking important in calculating its power.

maybe brick break over fire punch would be better, they both hit steels anyway. i would also suspect it will get a good physical fairy move and possibly a better fire/fighting/ground attack

Brick break means you'll have trouble with Skarmory, and hard countered by Sub/Disable Gengar. MegaMawile is also probably gonna get destroyed by MegaLucario and MegaBlaziken. Still too soon to make any definitive calls.

If the use of the term "sharply" to describe its defenses increasing on account of its Mega transformation did indeed mean that a Mega Mawile would have its defenses doubled, said Mega Mawile with 252 Atk EVs would have approximately the following base stats (presuming the same EV investment):

HP: 50
Atk: 220
Def: 188
SpA: 55
SpD: 128
Spe: 50

Of course one could rejigger the EVs to make it super-tanky physically (especially if Intimidate goes off before transforming) or less susceptible to special attacks. As-is, it seems to be less bulky than Eviolite Porygon2 on both sides.
