Thing is, in the anime-verse Pokémon don't have levels; they evolve whenever they feel like evolving. In Ash's unique case, he loves his Pokémon as they are, so they have no incentive to evolve. Unfortunately, this also makes Ash the shittiest trainer in the history of forever.

That's not it at all.

He lets his Pokemon decide if they want to evolve or not. Pikachu and Bulbasaur had no desire to evolve, so he let them stay as they were.

Squirtle, Totodile, Corphish and Oshawott didn't really have this issue, though. They just never really showed any signs of evolving.

As the anime clearly proves, there's really nothing stopping a Pokemon from leaving its trainer if they don't want to be with them anymore.

Pokemon are far more powerful than humans. Pokeballs aren't perfect. There's nothing stopping a Pokemon from popping out of its Pokeball on its own. Forcing a Pokemon to do something it doesn't want to do isn't generally a very good idea.

There are cases like Tepig that are like that. But there are also other cases like Snivy who simply her trainer.

In the anime, compassion towards one's Pokemon is considered a favorable trait. The reason Ash is considered a good trainer in the anime isn't because of his battling skills, but his ability to empathize with his Pokemon.

A trainer who can't empathize with and feel compassion for their Pokemon is generally considered to be trash.

And yet he's made it to the top 8 of the Sinnoh Tournament. That means he was better than every other trainer who did worse than him. Not only that, but he was the only one who was able to take down two of Tobias's Pokemon, whereas no other trainer was able to beat one.

In particular, every single one of Paul's Pokemon were fully evolved. Ash still managed to win despite having a Pikachu and a Buizel in his party.

He's also beaten a Raichu with his Pikachu on two separate occasions. His Snivy took out a Servine. Many of his initial stage Pokemon were able to take out fully evolved Pokemon on multiple occasions. His Squirtle took out a Machamp with a fucking Bubble attack.

Ash is actually a competent trainer. He's still a hothead, he's still reckless, but he's growing up and acts as a mentor to Dawn. Also, Dawn's contests are fun to watch, and Jesse gets her own little Contests storyline wich I loved, since it shows her being more than just "Fail at stealing Pikachu and blasting off" Ash also has a pretty damn potent team near the end of the season

Ash is suddenly fucking retarded again. Hell, I even want to go far ans say that he's even more stupid than in Kanto. Team Rocket actually pose a semi-threat. Sure, they fail to capture Pikachu, and the other Pokemon they are usually after, but they actually got some shit done, and when they did fail they made a hasty retreat via smoke bombs and shit like that, and then retreating. It was pretty cash ( too bad they went back to classic TR in the second half)

You both have shit taste. Serious Team Rocket came just when we needed them, as great as goofy Team Rocket is they were too goofy in Sinnoh and the new approach to the trio in Unova was a welcome change.

They weren't as good as they were in Kanto to Hoenn but serious Team Rocket were still good for their own reason. Then when they started acting like their old selves again it was a return to form. They weren't Sinnoh level and still kept a few of their new tricks from their promotion giving Ash and friends a challenge from time to time.

Starters that are "Awesome" as unevolved Pokemon don't evolve.

However he never arranged them well as a team. A perfect example of this is the last match in the Unova League. Ash uses Unfezant, Oshawott, Pignite, Snivy, Boldore and Pikachu. Only one of his fully evolved Pokémon was used and it wasn't even the powerhouse that is Krookodile.

Chimchar only seemed awesome because of his hex blaze that triggered sometimes.

Normally he was no better than most other Pokemon. Treecko was just lone cool guyish. his battling wasn't outstanding or abnormally good for it's level.

Can't speak for the entire organization but the trio form bonds similar to those Ash has with his Pokémon. James has the potential to be a pretty competent trainer if he focused on training his Pokémon instead of stealing other people's, whenever he and Jessie had access to a powerful Pokémon James was always the better trainer.

Having a single protagonist across the whole series is too convenient. Every time Ash finishes a new region, his roster of Pokemon grows. The more it grows, the less incentive the producers have to replace him. They can bring back any of his old Pokemon whenever they deem fit. You can't do that if they have a new protagonist every series.

Yeah, that episode was fucking bullshit. Ash barely had a full 3 Pokemon team at the start of the battle, and he still almost managed to win despite his extreme handicap. And the show goes on to present Richie as the better trainer.
