Like that's the important thing to remember. Your lack of an item and taking up your possible mega slot means your Mega has to pack a lot of punch for what it does.
Mega Kanga is an example of such, being a banded 125 atk sweeper with more benefits than weaknesses.
Mega Charizard X has life orb with no negatives while having stats and stabs that are extremely relevant.
Mega Blaziken is LO blaziken with it's bulk improved.
To best utilize a mega on a pokemon like flygon who has that cusp potential, it needs to get a boost that it will be able to utilize effectively.
It's why the person who suggested bug/dragon with regenerator was on the right track, since it basically would have massively increased longevity, a greatly improved U-Turn, and would only have needed more bulk/attack instead of the SpA to best utilize flygon's strengths as an Offensive Pivot.
