I also wanted to weigh in on the new theory /shw/ is testing about FS shinies.
Personally, for me all my FS shinies (I have found about 10-15 now) have jumped up on me after hunting for anywhere from 10 minutes to a couple of hours. There have been hunts I've stopped without getting any shinies as well, of course.
But I've never gotten any as the first of its species when exploring a safari for the first time or right after accessing a safari I've chosen.

Sounds a little farfetch'd, and I'm still a bit skeptical (even having found a shiny emolga on the first encounter after 16 safaris last night), but there's no doubt a lot of people have found shinies on their first encounter in a Friend Safari.

I tested this theory yesterday, and got this little cutie on the 28th attempt re-entering a safari.
Second encounter and the first Eevee to show up, first was a normal Lillipup.
There were also two people (?) who got shinies within the first few encounters, but had encountered that Pokemon at least once already, so it's still mostly speculation at this point

Due to the large number of occurences this might be true, seeing a lot of people got shinies this way faster than normal hunting in safari.
