SPL and every smogon tourney is an exhibition match, and the stallfests are just for show. They have to to give the illusion that all playstyles are represented (which SPOILERS it isn't on the ladder). Then they have the audacity to doublespeak and say HO was nerfed, when we all know the latest series of tests is shit that reks HO. Meanwhile the really needed bans, Deoxys, will never happen.

This is literally not true. Like, it's a lie in the sense of "it is straight up fucking wrong". Watch some SPL matches if you want, or alternatively look at their bans so far and realize they were banning almost exclusively HO powerhouses.

That's not "picking off megas", that's banning three that are far too powerful to work in the singles metagame.

3 of the banned Megas belonged to OU/Uber Pokemon that were already good, and anyone should be able to see why M-Kanga got banned. There are other Megas that will never see OU, much less Ubers.

You can't get rid of luck, but if you want to play a game that is nothing but a coin flip to decide who wins that's your choice. Smogon is just getting rid of tactics that make entire battles determined by RNG alone. The fact that they're trying to make a meta that is less dependent on luck just reduces the amount of scrubs in comp.

My best was over 1800 on the special double ladder, though I suffered some shitty losses and was left with circa 1650 before the rankings reset.

Not really relevant to the discussion though, seeing as the playstyle is completely different.

Back when I still played sims I broke top 10 on shoddy battle OU ladder. I can dig some relevant screencaps if you really want, although I don't see a point.

But really, ask any good player on smogon - unless the quality of players significantly dropped since I last left that cesspool of modjerk and dumbfuckery I can guarantee you he will tell you pretty much the same thing as I just did.

I don't hate Smogon, but the idea of tiers upsets me. It ends up over-centralizing the meta game and the Smogon mentality is if your team isn't comprised of U, V, W, X, Y, and Z Pokemon, it's shit. They've closed down discussion threads about certain Pokemon before they even got a chance to be discussed, claiming that they're not worth a thread because they feel like they are shit in the meta game. People would use OU: the Team even if Smogon didn't exist. In fact, without the bans, it would be even more overcentralised and non-diverse, which by the way the meta before the Kang ban seriouly was.

Its usually better if you don't pack generic OU-mon to the battle as it can throw the opponent off since they don't really face it, it's happened a couple of times with Durant. The only OUmon I usually have for keeps on my team is Mamoswine.

this is why baton pass teams are not worth being nerfed/banned/suspected.
They may be gamebreaking, but they are also very hard to setup. Running mental herb on Scolipede to avoid Taunt is nice, but then you're helpless against Smogonbird.
Running a successful baton pass team requires autism-tier attention to threats.

I have a genuine question: why do people hate generic teams? There's a reason people use them, they're good and they work. In 100% honesty how many times have you seen Aegislash / Talonflame / Mega Pinsir / Bisharp / Deoxys / Thundurus or anything along the lines of that? Not as often as people hype it up to be. There are a couple of reasons. Teambuilding is a big part of the game. Some people think that ignoring that part of the game altogether just to inflate your ladder rating is lame. Losing with a team you made yourself against a copypasted team piloted by someone of equal or lesser skill can be frustrating due to the perception that the other person didn't work as hard as you (in the teambuilding phase) but still came out on top. A player might have their own code of pokemon ethics in their head that they [unreasonably] expect the other player to follow which includes not using copypasted teams. Then they get upset when the other player doesn't follow it kind of like smogonfags and smogon rules in casual cartridge play

I know swagplay isn't that op. It's not hard at all to get past and its the same reason why Whimsicott isn't as OP as it was originally thought as in gen V. There are plenty of counters to prankster and if you can't get past a prankster klefki, you're an idiot. luck factor in the game and shitty rng abuse strategies such as evasion and swagplay are completely different things. sure, a random crit or a miss can turn the tables, catch you or an opponent off guard and adds variety of sorts. rolling the highest damage output possible and scoring that unlikely KO is of the same priciple. a lower accuracy can also be easily justified as an opportunity cost for picking a stronger move.
swagplay, evasion, paraflinch etc do nothing but remove all skill from each battle and turn it into a pure coinflip - no strategy, prediction, mindgames - nothing of what makes battling fun. this is complete bullshit. it's like trying to argue that fucking gambling is a legitimate long time income source because you won 500 bucks two weeks in a row
