It fell short. While I like it, I would have preferred minor touches, like spiky or jagged teeth (like Haunter). When I first saw the mega I thought the spikes on its hands we actually the hands which had turned into claws and merged into the ground and then come back up, sadly he just got witty bitty Nubby fingers Haunter fags aren't so bad, I mean I disagree (what with Gengar having been my favorite for my pokemon experience) but I can see why Haunter would be more "attractive" to some people. My former roommate who's semi-causal phrased his opinion on why gengar is better like this, "You see Haunter haunts you, messes with you for shits and giggles but Gengar? Gengar fucks with you without remorse."
