Theyre all rentals - totally free for that race - but some of them literally cant run, others perform but poorly, one performs extremely well at one aspect but poor at others, and one outperforms everythign else at its best ability, while also matching or besting the majority at everything else.
Its not "hey this $80,000 car is better than these $3,000 cars" because Pokemon has no cost to using one team member over another besides opportunity costs (especially megas) and everyone gets the same selection.
But when one specific choice is better than everything else while also not being bad at anything it needs to do, then it makes the other choices pointless.
Sure you could use the car that turns well on a windy track, but why when theres a faster car that can handle the same turns almost as well, and is enormously faster?
Why would I rely on Spiritomb to Will o wisp things when I could use Prankster Sableye?
Why would i use gengar to put things to sleep if I have Darkrai? Why use Spore Parasect when Breloom exists?
Blocking some pokeomn from usage means others that do a similar, but less effecient, job fill their place.
Case in point - Mega Lucario was banned late because Mega Kanga and Blaziken took its spot. Once those were banned, shit like Gengar and other megas still competed for it, but after a while, using your mega for anything but Lucario was actively weakening your team.
Need a special attacker? Lucario
Need a physical attacker? Lucario
But theres no point to using Lucario if you have Mega Kangaskhan because shes just as fast, bulkier, and much stronger and also has Scrappy Power-Up Punch and a 60BP, fighting-type Swords Dance
