I believe people are saying the anime is canon for the following reason:

Similar event could happen in both timeline. So Alain might exist but he's not the same one as the Ashnime.

We had anime references since at least DPPt, and, if anything, Ash having an OT number would prove Ash exist on the gameverse. But it's still a reference.
