Why didn't they use the Emerald teams? I beat them in two turns. I mean, I get that Pokemon games aren't supposed to be horribly difficult but fuck give me a little bit of a challenge, GameFreak.

Dark-types were shit back then, only Houndoom could make use of dark-type moves and he wasn't even obtainable in RS.

Yes, I agree with that concept, but it was a simple battle in Emerald too, so I don't know what the fuck are you talking about. Taking 3 turns instead of 2 (or 1, if you used Surf like I did), doesn't make the battle a test.

Only Gym fight in the entire franchise that I considered hard was Whitney's Miltank in GS, and it's probably because I was a kid and it was one of the earlier games.

Tate and Liza in Emeralrd are my favorite gym battle, probably the hardest one in my opinion as well, maybe rivaled with Gardenia in Platinum,
It's not just the two added pokémon, but their moveset as well. Claydol settingspamming EQ with Xatu partner flying. Xatu will also set up Sunny Day for Solrock's Solar Beam so the battle can be "hard with Swapert as well unless you're overleveled. In which case you have no right to talk about gym battles at all.

I was going with a GENIII-only theme. So I put Combusken in and then at the last gym, when I couldn't decide which pokémon I should use for the last spot (the other four were solid choces in my mind) I just said fuck it let's go with the starter. I feel bad for Sceptile now though.

Not only you're always going to be higher leveled in Emerald, but even if you're not, you can always dual surf to kill the rocks, Claydol and then destroy the Xatu.

Yeah, same.

It must be the expanded movepools or some shit, because I destroyed them with Iron Head on Lairon and Shadow Ball on Gardevoir.

And I remember struggling with my Mightyena way back when, but I think the fact I wasn't clued up on how Special Attack worked vs Attack is probably the biggest revelation there.

When are people going to realize the low difficulty of Pokemon games doesn't come from what Pokemon the NPC's own, its how they use them and how bad they are prediction and their Pokemon's shitty movepools. Any NPC who doesn't have knock-off doesn't have clue what to do against my harvest + sitrus berry Tropius, they keep trying to chip away at it while I sit there munching on berries waiting for toxic to faint them.

It's also the reason why people found the RS team hard too back then.

Want to test your Pokemon and skills? You play online.

Gym battle aren't meant to be anything more than story progression because this is an all ages game, not Dark Souls Dante must Die
It needs to be easily accessable for all ages, make it hard and you alienate their main audience.

Plus due to games that are easy to jump in and out of on a whim like COD and Angry Birds kids don't have the attention span to play to completion.

I couldn't even bring myself to play past the fourth Gym because the whole experience had been brain dead. The level curve is garbage, and the fact that none of the leaders even have half decent teams is a travesty.

Where is my hard-mode, GameFreak?

For fucks sakes, Game Freak did a great job with the Elite 4 and a terrible job with the gym leaders. Trainers like Glacia are perfect; they use something in the gameplay (in this case hail) to put a twist on things and force you into a situation designed to test how you handle it.

How fucking cool would it have been to have something like that had happened with Tate and Liza? Trick Room, or Gravity? Something to take advantage of their fucking pokemon, which would hopefully be more than 2.
