Mystery dungeon is a roguelike, and that genre is niche as fuck, it may not be for you

Also, the best (most challenging) dungeons are post game.

At least that's how it is in Red, I recently restarted it and beat it these holidays, currently I'm at Purity Forest

One of the hardest battles in PMD Red/Blue was fighting Zapdos when your partner was a grass type. Your partner would get all angry at Zapdos and run in front of you, then Zapdos would use gust and obliterate it in one or two hits.

I felt so good when I finally managed to beat it though. Same with recruiting Mew, it was so difficult to find since it took so long to traverse those 60 floors to find Mew. Once I got it though...felt great.

Maybe it was just luck but I was Bulbasaur, with squirtle as partner and my Bullet Seed Raped most bosses...

Yes. Got it on eShop to see if I could get more demo codes, and it was surprisingly good. Ended up playing it more than I play the TCG one.

So I made a pastebin specifically for this thread (after making pastebins for /eog/ and /ssbg/, I seem to be unable to stop). It's a starter guide with analysis on partner/mc choices and things they bring to the table in a PMD context, and some useful-if-less-obvious tips to the PMD series in terms of gameplay.

The starter/partner analysis is largely based on Explorer's content, but most of the concepts easily translate into Red/Blue, and Gates (more so with move and gameplay analysis/tips rather than mons for the latter).

The picture was in jest. The only opinion in the guide is how terrible Phanpy is, which is less opinion and more a careful evaluation based on what little it offers compared to the cast given its barren movepool for the entirety of story mode until you get to post-game evolution.
It's still viable, just not great compared to every other pokemon choice.

You pretty much NEED an earthquake tm to have a chance of winning the final battle in Dark Crater, and have enough reviver seeds to be okay with your other 2 pokemon getting killed by it. All Phanpy gets other than Normal attacks is Ancientpower and Rollout.

I ended up taking Eevee last time forgetting all about Run Away. Eevee was just one massive liability, the second it hit half health it was useless in battle. That and Phanpy is probably the hardest combo

That's why those two specifically are tiered separate from the rest of the cast in the pastebin.

Run Away Eevee as a partner and Phanpy as anything are the two worst mon choices you can make but at least Eevee is useful half of the time.
