Hey /vp/ I got an odd question for you.

How... how do you single battle?

I'm a doubles kind of guy. There are a lot of creative strategies and its the official World Tournament format. But I met a bunch of people recently who play singles only, and for some reason I just can't think of any good strategy for one on one.

Maybe buff and baton pass? Should I just run a team of sweepers? I just don't know. Can anyone quickly educate me on how to function in this format competitively?

I know the main games are all single battles, but let's be honest the Pokemon haven't been hard since the 5th grade.

Anything erring on the tanky side that can set up, priorities are always a plus. Against another player try to out think them, do the opposite of what you think they would do.

Back in Gen 5 I had a team of 6 that had a Tyranitar and Garchomp. People would always bring Tyranitar and Garchomp counters to the battle...And I would never bring the Tyranitar or Garchomp into the battle. Psyche people out that way, don't do what they think you'll do. Always think one step ahead and you've already won.

You are playing singles wrong then, as switching is not competitive, so are type advantages and Entry Hazards. But Stockpile is the best move, and 3 attacks Castform is a beast in battle!

Yes! You just put Psych-up, Clear Smog and Cosmic Power! See, you start off with Cosmic Power to become really bulky. When your opponent starts boosting his attack and/or speed, you just use Psych-Up to get the same boosts! After that you use Clear Smog´, just to fuck with them. It's brilliant!

People do a lot more switching and hazards are important.

You want to get Stealth Rock or a layer or two of Spikes up early in the battle. Have one or two pokemon with immense destructive power to act as your wallbreakers and send those out early too. They're usually just a little too slow to be a sweeper themselves, stuff like Bisharp or Mega Medicham.

Once you've punched holes in your opponent's team, you send in your sweeper. They can be anything that's fast and can set up. Ideally, you send in your sweeper against something it forces out. An example as sending out Manaphy (That one's getting distributed soon, right? Fuck, I want a Manaphy) against a Heatran. Your opponent probably won't want to sacrifice their Heatran, and Heatran can't do much to Manaphy, so you have a free opportunity to use Tail Glow or Rain Dance to boost your power. Use your power boost to take out the rest of your opponent's worn-down team.

No you know the very basics of singles strategy.

Oh ,and one last thing, you know how in doubles you put protect on everything? Don't do that in Singles. Protect is only really good for using with Wish or for waiting for your mega stats to kick in when your base form is ass, like for Mega Diancie or Mega Beedrill.
