If it helps I have a decent paying job and I played all third versions to completion except Emerald.
I played both red and blue though I beat red first, chose charmander in red and squirtle in blue, eventually started a new game to try out bulbasaur. I kept all three starters and pikachu in yellow.
I played both gold and silver. Started with silver first, once again tried out all starters but Totodile was my first. In crystal I played as a boy and chose Totodile every single time I played it. I've beaten Crystal several times its probably my favorite pokemon game.
I played both ruby and sapphire. Sapphire first. I played as a boy in Sapphire and as a girl in ruby. Swanpert was my first starter and I never used Treecko. Never finished Emerald but picked boy and Mudkip.
I played both Diamond and Pearl. i beat Diamond but not Pearl. Played as a boy in both versions. Empoleon was my first starter but I completey regretted it and chose Turtwig in Pearl. In Platinum I played as a boy and chose Turtwig and made a dream team.
Picked Tepig and Boy in both Black and white. Never finished black, but I did finish White. Played through black 2 as a boy with tepig once again, didn't touch this gen anymore outside of that. Also I fucking loved PWT.
Played both X and Y but only finished X. I played as a boy with Chespin and Charmander was my kanto starter. Kept both all the way through. Picked the same setup in Y though I never finished it.
