It was such a huge change that it was damn near culture shock.
Ruby and Sapphire had a fucking FRACTION of content that Gold and Silver did, and you couldn't even get all the Pokémon in it.
So fans of Johto in particular were incredibly turned off of Hoenn.
And that's just the fans of Johto.
There's also all the usual complaints like the shitload of water, ect ect, that MOST fans hate.
Then the reason Hoennbabbies are hated nowadays is because they shitposted non-stop. Kids who grew up on Gen 3 were pretty much in the age range of underageb& right up until OR/AS launched where the average kid playing Gen 3 would finally be around 18, which means that Hoennbabbies are pretty much known for being underage /v/ tier shitposters who shit on other games non-stop.
You can claim "J-Johtoddler!" all you like, but NO group of Pokémon fans even comes CLOSE to the level of shitposting that Hoennbabbies do. Hoennbabbies tend to lash out at fans of Gen 2 and 4, because they feel neglected that people didn't like their "ugly duckling" Gen. So they shit on the predecessor, and the successor, because there's no real way of defending Gen 3. You are NEVER going to convince someone that there wasn't too much water, even if you, for some fucking reason, didn't mind it.

The only games that you could MAYBE argue hit that same level of quality and content, is B2/W2, in which case it really depends whether you think Unova holds up against Johto/Kanto. IMO I think they're about equal. Both with minor flaws, but still miles ahead of any other Pokémon game to date.
