Barry wasn't enough, we NEED a proper asshole rival. Of all the shit that they autistically stuck to as a pattern they want to keep forever (a tree-named prof, choose from 3 starters of Fire Water and Grass, Every region has 8 gyms, Every region has Elite Four, Every region pretends the entire thing is a Pokedex quest even when it's literally hopeless at this point, etc), having an asshole rival that you love to hate and need to beat the shit out of was probably the most important thing and they just left it behind for no real purpose.

Wally was cute and a nice change of pace at the time R/S were released, and everyone in B/W was great but we're on a losing streak with good rival characters as of Gen VI.

Both of the new rivals for S/M are fucking terrible and I already hate them
