But isn't the point of setting up different categories so there's a place for most pokemon to be viable?

Because if Smogon didn't exist then less pokemon would be used, because there aren't tiers that ban good pokemon.

It's not like the earlier gens had team variety anyways.

Agatha's team was all poison types. The only mons on Lance's team that weren't flying types were unevolved failures.
