The fact it's entire usefulness is hinged on it's hidden ability (and even then only utilising one move as far as I know) meant that it was absolute trash in game with horrible tm compatibility (or lack thereof) and hardly any usefulness over using Leavanny or Simisage.

This was the begining of them balancing the starters almost solely on hidden abilities and it stinks.

A lot of the starters need their movepool improved. Take 5th gen, Serperior and Samurott need better stuff to work with. Emboar at least has a good movepool.
Typhlosion and Meganium too(Though Meganium needs more than an improved movepool)

I used it as a tank with Coil, Leaf Blade and Leech Seed. It has pretty decent defenses and a really good speed for a tankmon.
It won the E4 and a lot of the PWT matches for me.

Just one extra move of a different type would go a long way for each.

Typhlosion suffers from the same problem as Sceptile in that hes got a great physical moveset, but a lacking special movepool, only even worse than Sceptile. And unlike Sceptile, he doesn't have Swords Dance to compensate.

Vespiquen is surprisingly beefy for a bug Pokemon. If it wasn't slow as dirt, it'd be fucking wonderful outside of that rock weakness. But damn, her ability to tank against hits really is something to be scared of.

Right up until using one, I expected its subpar Attack to hold it back and only work as a gimmickmon. The high BP of its attacks and its job as a setup pokemon for unburden with acrobatics and/or sky attack really made it misleading. I mean you still can't let it into the Talonflame environment but that's only a factor of another newly introduced pokemon being stupid as fuck.

If you played leaf green and picked Charmander you were forced to think about how strong the Pokemon is because just showing up with a natural level progression and balanced team for that point doesn't amount to enough for Misty's. You think you're prepared with a Pikachu and a Bellsprout but they don't actually beat it without overlevelling, it's way faster than both and for that stage of the game is crazy strong even through a grass resist (bellsprout lost all of its sp.def after gen I lel). It's not like your karp is evolved yet or anything.

Just picked it up because I've heard Lenora could pose some problems. This fucker proceeded to tear her a new one and stayed on top for the entire game.

When ever Sawk is an option to get Sawk is a given member of my team. That Sturdy + Counter Combo into Close Combat spamming is too good.

This babe right here. Wanted a replacement for Serperior because I was attempting to actually play legally and Contrary wasn't released yet. Got 4 kills in her first match, and since then it's been a wonderful time of mind games and ducking brave birds.

You have to trade-evolve it TWICE, and it's already an absurdly rare Pokemon. It is better than most people give it credit for, but it's such a pain in the ass that most people only get it to fill the Pokedex if at all.

I used one with Coil, Aqua Tail and Leaf Blade.
Not gonna lie, always having to use the boosting move was annoying af. But it was alright.
