Now I remember never getting a Snubbul back in by Silver version; checked up Serebii and back then it could only be found at that route near Ecruteak with the Tauros and Miltank, but it had a 1% spawn chance and even then it could flee the battle.

I think no NPC trainer ever used a Granbull, too.

apart from clefairy and snubbull, this post is 100% correct. clefiry and snubbull don't really count since they don't have much to do with their counterparts. a better counterpart for herdier would be growlithe, while elgyem should be substituted by munna, with drowzee as a counterpart.
plus clefairy and snubbull look pretty decent and original for their time.

I think you may have pinpointed why Gen V feels like a slog to me.
People hate on Johto's level curve but at least the entire Johto dex is fully evolved before level 40 (with exception of Tyranitar) whereas Unova only has like 5 lines that don't require high-30s-mid 50s, all of them early route trash no one's genuinely interested in. If you want a cool mon in Unova you need to beat half the game, catch it then grind on rustling patch Audino for a couple of hours.

Man I played through Gold, Silver and Heartgold and I don't remember this asshole at all. Why was so much of Johto forgettable? You've got legendary locales like Goldenrod but there's so much dross.

I used him on my first ever team on blue, because I wanted a pure grass type. I wanted my pokemon to have only one type pokemon because I picked Squirtle and I wanted them to "match". Man I miss when Pokemon was new.

I don't think Granbull is forgettable because it's fairy type. I love it when non-fairy or cutesy or pink things are considered fairy such as Mawile because it shows that there's more to fairies than just girly tinker bell shit. Show Granbull to someone who doesn't know Pokemon and the last thing they'd think it is is a fairy.
