Back before the games were released, i, like nearly everyone else, was enamored with Gallantoad. It struck me as the best example of ITJUSTGETSBIGGER done correctly, though i admittedly hoped the real thing was a bit more creative.
When i First saw Greninja a couple of days before the game launch, i remember my main reaction being a bit polarizing, but the tongue-scarf aspect showcased the creativity i wanted to see in the evo line, so i gave it a chance based completely on that one aspect. When we got more footage, along with a cleaner reference, i grew to like it even more than Gallantoad.
The tongue-scarf is an incredibly creative little detail that fits perfectly on a frog, and getting rid of it would make Greninja lose most of its flair. I have to admit i honestly hoped that it'd be a bit more dynamic, though. I was hoping what the leaks said would be true and the tongue-scarf form would be a temporary battle stance, and that it would retract it in other occasions. I thought we would see him constantly use his tongue in battle in unique ways; but alas it always just seems to be... there. As if it were an inert scarf.
My guess is that they decided to leave it scarfed most of the time in order to have some sort of media representation consistency, but i am disappointed in the lack of potential. It does seem like it could be a very expressive feature. I prefer how it is used in good fanart.
