I started in gen 4 and if you don't think that checking out the previous installments in a franchise that you're supposedly a fan of is worth doing there has to be something wrong with you. It's Pokémon in its purest form. The sprites are goofy and charming despite not being high in quality and the battle mechanics are more finely tuned (for singleplayer) because each move was selected for each pokemon without the need to worry about 7 million types, abilities and the phys/spec split. Fucking around with the games bugs is also a blast. You can buy it for dirt cheap on the e-shop, check it out

There are now two more types than there were in gen 1, the most recent was added just a few years ago. I have also never had any problem playing single player despite any of these things you claim to be drawbacks of the more recent games. I really don't buy your argument for gen 1 games. They were objectively shit compared to more recent games, and there has to be something wrong with *you* for defending them so strongly.

What I meant by that is that it doesn't feel as cluttered with bullshit as the newer games, every move is given to a pokemon for a purpose and every pokemon location is there for a good reason. An example of this is that the locations of psyduck and ponyta are right before the fire and grass gyms respectively, and aren't too far away from evolving when you catch them. They don't seem to do this kind of thing in any of the later games, though gen 3 was pretty good at it. Gen 4 (my favorite gen) was fucking awful at this since you could catch level 3 ponytas and psyducks at the beginning of the game which would be totally useless for most of your journey because they evolve in the late game and learn shit moves before that. I really want to stress how 'pure' it is as a pokémon game. Each new installment has had to add a major change to keep things interesting and to add variety and it's very refreshing to know that the original is there that only has the bare minimum, no clutter and is still good. It just bugs me how everyone on this board seems to shit on gen 1 when they really aren't bad games and have tons of interesting design choices that people here seem to ignore

X pokemon now learns Follow Me despite it being useless in the main adventure? Stop it from learning it, doesn't take much more than that

I started with Gen 2 and went back to Gen 1 right after, I'm fine with pretty much all the games except Gen III, which I can't stand playing personally because it's basically the awkward teen years mechanically. But other than map design from a gameplay standpoint, I'd say Gen 1 is pretty weak. Battles have terrible balance, setting isn't very interesting, and nothing else is even remarkable enough to comment on. I wouldn't call it terrible, but I wouldn't call any of Gen 6 terrible either.

I generally refrain from going back to Gen 1 for those reasons, between RBY just not being that solid and FRLG being in that weird middle ground. I wish they'd remake Kanto again and give it a total overhaul and a big expansion to make it really wonderful.
