personally, I think the coolest side trek is on Johto Route 34 (south of Goldenrod) when you can surf to a little forest clearing and battle a bunch of water trainers. just a little nostalgic thing I found on a random day when I thought I had long cleared everything there was to do in the game. one way or the other I've never found another game has delivered the same sense of adventure as that had.

Like I said, without access to FRLG, and Emerald - or at least Colosseum - you were short a lot of Pokemon and there wasn't any clear answer about whether your favorite Pokemon were coming Back. Yeah, Mudkip is cool, but it's hard to get excited about Mudkip when you won't fucking tell me how to get my old GSC team on this game. That was a universal complaint, and remember, we were all over 10 years younger. We were goddam retarded and didn't know how this was all gonna pan out.
