Writing for a somewhat practical take on the Pokémon universe with emphasis on domestication as an emergent cultural phenomenon as I do, Pokémon that could (should) destroy property on contact are difficult to place. While some are easy enough to work around, Muk and Magcargo cause problems that, while solvable, are more easily avoided whenever that same nature isn't requisite for their role in the story. They become challenge Pokémon—Just what circumstance gives them a time to shine?—which can be a fun prompt, but also risks becoming a gimmick.

I don't think writers should be afraid to take a concept in a dex entry and run with it, expanding and extrapolating it across a whole range of related subjects. These threads have been getting archived pretty quickly lately, and that makes me wonder about something: does anyone around here know if the writethread existed during the release of any earlier games, and if so, how did it fare then? I've only been in these threads for less than two months, so I don't know how this thread handled game release hype storms in the past.

Did the writethread just get wiped out and everyone had to wait a while to resume the threads? Or did they all move to another place, such as the IRC channel linked in the OP, to continue their discussions and whatnot?

I have to wonder if that IRC channel could serve as a sort of bunker for us to go to during the SM release so we can keep our discussions and general writefaggotry going strong. I've never been there, though, so I'm not sure how conducive it is to the kind of discussion we have here.

In my experience the IRC is pretty dead, except late-night shitposting which can be fun. It'll make a decent bug-out for us while the thread is impossible to maintain but don't expect much. I haven't been on there since a couple weeks before my laptop shit itself though.

Move-sets: In Ocimene, move-sets are only relevant in League play, at the administration's discretion. As portrayed to date, two formats have been seen. One is registered set, which locks in a pokemon to four moves for the course of the competition (C/E 7); this is nearest to canon. Writing PMD, I tend to reference a Pokemon's natural level-up learnset and estimate their level based on how much life and combat experience they'd have built up over the years, and move from there. TMs are a weird subject that I haven't fully figured out how to tackle in-'verse yet, so I leave those alone, and only allow egg moves if the character's father would naturally grant that move.

I think that especially in a PMD setting abilities, natures and characteristics can go great strides to establish a rough character and determine how they would fight; e.g. my protagonist, a Luxio, would be best described as Brave or Adamant, and out of the given characteristics in game, some from both HP ("Loves to eat," "takes plenty of siestas") and Attack ("quick-tempered," "likes to fight") apply to her, meaning that she'd likely be something of a bulky attacker. Not only does this fit the Luxio line pretty well statwise, but it was something I already decided for the character. That said, though, already you might be getting an idea of what she's like without having read a damn word of my story which I still haven't written.

Overall I wouldn't adhere to them exactly, but they can be good guidelines to establish a Pokemon's character if you're the sort of writer or in the sort of setting to give Pokemon a lot of screentime.

Though I haven't written much, I always make little charts that include all the statistical info about my Pokemon characters: gender, level, ability, moves, nature, and characteristic. However, I don't usually explicitly give all those details in the story. The only time I've done so thus far is in Outcast of Comb Island with one scene where the main human uses a device to scan a Pokemon and it clearly displays all that info for the reader to see.

To be more specific, I have hoped that in long format, a greater impression of my perspective is given than would be by simply telling a brief overview of the situation. For example, my treatment of Dragonite and Flygon in the light post and parcel delivery field; It's more than answering a question like "Which Pokémon could be used to carry mail?" it's forming a metaphor, with Dragonite being powerful and enduring but also rather bulky; Flygon, a specialist that is seen less often but has its niche. I have hoped that their appearances in LL and NGON said more about it than a rhetorical paragraph enumerating "pros and cons" of giving a dragonfly a load of Resident circulars.

But perhaps short essays would be more useful as a resource to others, assuming anyone would be so self-destructive they would look to a no-hits-no-reviews like me for advice on technique. As a blog, however, it would need a platform, and frankly /vpwt/ has already captured much of whatever useful things I might think to say on such matters, up to 2000 characters' worth at a time, at least.

Answering my own question:

First, I do tend to stick to the four-move limit even if I don't have an IC justification yet, mostly because my outlook on the use of supernatural powers like that in terms of conflict and tension. Each has movesets that aren't entirely sound from a competitive battling perspective, however, since none of them were trained for that end. Instead they have movesets reflecting their anticipated battling conditions or out-of-battle responsibilities.

I've tried giving the pokemon natures that correspond to their personalities, and I've given them EV spreads depending on their specific training. Their levels represent how intense their training has been. I disregard IVs and when I double-check my fight sequences I set them all to 31.

fite weesl is generally anthropomorphic (can relate in anatomy, easier to paint a picture of) and is one of my favorites, therefore most of the stories that brew in my brain gravitate towards despite me writing tens of thousands of phox. That being said, it's still one of my favorite things to describe the movements and positions of beastly things, especially avian bodies. I probably should have studied to be a biologist.

Just wing it. In universe I have the excuse that you're locked to four moves when in battle but the pokemon can have an entire repertoire. abilities only come up when plot demonds it.

Easy: Pokemon that are based on and not too different from IRL animals.

These pokemon are often easy-mode because they come with a built-in stereotype that an author may both honor and reverse. This saves on establishment, since you can simply have no establishment and trust that the stereotype will hold until you say otherwise.

Pic related: I was once called on featuring a lot of two things—Psychics and Mareep-line. This amused me especially because my next fic features special doggo and his struggle with and against Psychic-typing and at least one sparkysheep. In the latter case, it's always struck me as the kind of pokemon that has a distinct usefulness in each of its forms, but also one that just isn't good enough to see serious use. It falls into the sweet spot as a pokemon that nobody would feel bad about picking up but also not mind letting go, making it useful in supporting cast roles.

Challenging: Pokemon that are basically anthropomorphic innately. Lucario makes a good example of this because it's human enough to be written like one, such that an author forgets that it's a Pokémon; but its other half, jackal-sorta, isn't familiar enough to really bring a stereotype of its own. Indeed, the lore of its loyalty is borrowed from other more familiar canids. This requires that the pokemon be written very carefully with a focus not on either what features and abilities it shares with humans or how it differs from humans or non-humanoid pokemon, but on how it finds for itself a comfortable place along that spectrum. Doubly so if it's living under domestic conditions.

Not for the next story, except the most general stuff like "this is the direction the plot should move in". I'm not giving up on my plans for BSTF. I know that feel. That's definitely an understandable cause for concern.

But the way I see it, none of us know what you're planning to do with your story, so none of us will know if it ends up not living up to what you want out of it, and that in turn means we won't dislike it for that. People won't judge your story based on how well it matches what you wanted, but rather on the merit of the finished product.

So don't be anxious. It won't always turn out exactly like you wanted, but as long as it's good in the end, that's really the most important thing.

My next story isn't going to be "wing it", just a different planning style focusing on direction more than hitting specific scenes. Honestly it'd probably make for a smoother story at the cost of pacing and narrative conciseness. That I'm trying to make stories concise might be part of the problem, and I'm a big fan of trial and error, so that will be my next trial.

If you just throw it all in, readers might grow bored quickly, or the story may feel like it's going nowhere. In my next story I'm going to try to ignore that concern as much as my pacing 'tisms will allow, and I'll just rely on feedback to tell me what works and what doesn't as I go. I think you need to really put to paper what you personally think should be happening and push what your readers are expecting out of your mind - if you are writing logically, or otherwise building towards some kind of twist, what you produce will naturally fall in line with their expectations or give them a well-constructed surprise.

Feedback is great to work from, but you should have a general idea for the feel of your prose when you begin: are you intending to make this a very dense, analytical piece, something lighter, something more action focused, etc. Being concise, then, is a matter of taking that general feel you have in your head and saying only what is in service to it.

Just remember that the average attention span is much too short for regular storytelling, most people have already stopped reading this post.

Your readers have literally a million better things they could be doing so you have to keep them entertained every moment and also sated in the long term. Every sentence should be an interesting/funny hook and at least one major event should take place every 1000 words.

It needs more variation in flow and description. To have the whole battle be a robotic sequence of Trainers giving orders and brief descriptions of the subsequent actions gets stale.

Add more descriptions to the battle. Allow the Pokemon a little more latitude to interpret their orders.
Say something about the Pokemon's reactions, the trainers reactions, their feelings.
You can add some mid-battle banter between trainers, some trash talk. Or have internal monologues, the trainer strategizing their next move or stressing out.

I don't think you need to keep saying Mega Gallade every time after it's been introduced.

It's not really overlong, there's a knockout on line 9, and the pace doesn't let up from there. You could afford some more filler.

On the positive side, you have a good sense for description, which leads me to believe you can expand and polish this into an enjoyable action piece.

The reason I kept the pace up was because I couldn't stop thinking of the Ash-Greninja vs. Mega Sceptile fight from the anime which was crazy fast paced.

That's how I started Ears, actually. I thought about how fucking radical it would be to have some greater good-driven monarch Serperior fighting my MC from PSMD and having an intense clash of ideologies about how society was being run by heroes and teams of individuals. I wrote about a thousand words of a talkative fight scene and decided there an then that this idea was kosher as fuck. Looking back at the .txt now, that overarching narrative kind of fell apart on the split-second epiphany that I could place a much larger role in the antagonist's hands than simply being a revolutionary.

Achieving Ears pace hasn't been possible with any other fic I've done ever, chapter 2 I was so enthusiastic about that I didn't even take 2 days to complete the second draft. I work at a pace of 4 pages a day now, as it is enough to be productive but also works with my shitty attention span. In general, I tend to have an easier time with Pokémon that are more open-and-shut "creatures", since it's much easier to get into detail about them and the way they operate without sounding silly. Pokémon that stray further from that mold, I generally have to put quite a bit of thought in advance into how to depict them while seeming a plausible on official depictions but not contrived (hence why I probably won't be rushing out the gate to make a Mimikyu a major character in my writing).

18000 words sounds like to me like it's too long to keep in one piece. And seeing as the story is apparently already made up of multiple sections/segments, it would probably be best to divide it up into chapters, since it seems to have already been written in a way conducive to that.

I'm not so sure water and grass are anything to scoff at. Attacks like Razor Leaf, Leaf Blade, Razor Shell, and Scald sound like they could mess you up. Of course, fire would do more damage quicker, but getting sliced up by blades or doused in boiling water would still ruin your day.

It's canon the same way random people on the street stand in the same place forever and only say one static bit of text.
It's not something I'd take at face value. If even a champion's Pokémon is that much of a non-threat, Pokémon are irrelevant to any serious conflict and the games' talk about walking into the tall grass without a Pokémon to protect you is hot air. That would be a significantly less interesting world.

I'd interpret the scene you mentioned as it being a warning shot at the ground next to the grunt.

Well somehow the player manages to bring them along on missions in PSMD. I assume that they either can be contacted via long distance telepathy/dream speak or that they're given a Rescue Badge that lights up like the Batsignal any time their presence is seriously needed.

Also it probably wouldn't be that hard to find Hydreigon, he's probably still hanging out near Post Town if GTI is any indication. Hopefully the town finds out that Panne/Vallion are at least partially responsible for the deaths of their champions and they get a dramatic fight to deal with

I've been thinking about how Latias' claws work. I figure they could be like a pamprodactyl setup where the outer digits could be selectively opposable, but her wrist/forearm structure limits their range of motion. Looking at official art such as pic related, I'm not even sure Latias would be able to pick anything up realistically. She doesn't seem to have a wrist joint or proper fingers, and even if one of her claws can oppose the others like a thumb, they don't seem able to bend or curl like fingers to grasp anything, and they're also really stubby. Based on the official art, she wouldn't be able to hold anything without hugging it to her body or something.

But even so, in a case like this, I'd imagine some creative license and deviation from canon depictions would be acceptable if the story requires Latias to handle things with her hands. You might be able to just give her an opposable thumb, then handwave the rest and simply say "she's able to hold things, deal with it" without really focusing on the details.

That's pretty close to the allowances I've made in a blanket fashion for pokemon with anthropic-enough form that it makes sense for them to have at least marginal dexterity, if an excuse can be found. [omitted: a partial elaboration on my personal working theory on how Pokémon function.]

From the writing perspective, it's cheaper to spend some suspension of disbelief to let a Pokemon have pseudo-thumb than to go to great lengths trying to work around it. Your reader would rather let Lucario eat a chocolate bar than see it denied because of paw science applied to a cartoon character.

Inner monologue is traditionally the "voice in your head."
Inner dialogue I would assume is roughly the act of arguing with it. A quick search shows such a term being used in two contexts. One is psychological theory, and another is apparently self-help marketing fodder.

My point in noting a distinction here is that if you're writing internal monologue, you're mostly Telling what POV is thinking instead of showing how what POV is thinking affects the ABC's of showing†. If you're writing internal dialogue, you're either trying to portray POV's decision process, creating an artificial discussion to support awkward establishment (>>29396609), or stalling for time and filling space.

† I just made this up, but:
A: Actions show what a character believes needs to be changed to further its goals.
B: Behaviors show what the character has concluded after evaluating its environment or circumstance.
C: Choices show how and when the character's mindset is similar to or different from that of the reader.
D: Dialogue shows how and when the characters' mindsets are similar to or different from each other's.
E: Establishment shows, when done well, what the environment should look like in the reader's imagination. (Done poorly, it tells the reader what to imagine.)
(Because Forcing particular development is generally bad, I'll stop enumerating here. Also, got things to do today more important than this exercise.)

That might be a good idea. Getting some other people's opinions and thoughts on it could help when you feel yourself not making any progress.
I'm in a similar situation right now, actually. I've got a chapter of my own story that I've been proofreading for the last week, and I still feel bad about how it looks, but I'm thinking I'll just say screw it and publish it so I can (hopefully) end up with some other people perusing it and offering input.

I'm hardly an expert in this whole creative writing field, but I hesitate to call it a cop out as long as the writing is not actually shitty when you present it. It doesn't need to be perfect, but like you say, it's bad to knowingly show off something that's unfinished to the point of being chock full of errors. So I believe you should proofread by yourself at first and then collaborate with others as a later stage once you've gotten rid of most of the errors and brought it to an acceptable and presentable level. But that's just how I see it.

Plenty of tea, especially green tea and other herbal blends, -can- help with a bad cold, though. I just got over one recently using nothing but cough drops and lots and lots of tea. I only had plain green tea, but I think ginger would help clear your sinuses quite well. You can also get candied ginger, slice some fresh ginger into your meals (works great in stir fry), or even just buy some dark ginger ale (made with a higher concentration of the root) if you prefer. It's good stuff.

Not exactly because I wouldn't know how to ask what I'm looking for. So looking at examples help. But to be more specific I'll try. I'm looking for atmosphere and dialog.

Dialog: Two of the main characters are are male and I feel like using "he said" and "the boy with the glasses" is getting repetative and also confusing on who is speaking abd acting. I tried using other descriptors but don't want it to go purple-prose.

Atmosphere: Just want to see what others describe and how often in their fics when it comes to the enviorment and feeling of the scene. I'm running out of creative juice to describe whats happening around a small town or what's going on in the woods.

Dialogue: Names help. Aside from that, while lots of tagging is a necessity with more than two characters, when you have two, focus on the roles they play.

For example, in Eternally Vernal Chapter 4, dialogue makes up a long sequence between Anthony and Carol. Tagging is sparse; guestimating usually three to five lines of untagged dialogue between tags, typically as part of a gesture or other minor action. This is because their conversational roles are themselves tags, with Carol setting the tempo and Anthony playing the tune.

Pro tip: If the characters don't sound different enough for the reader to tell them apart (aside from terse comments), then your problem is bigger than dialog tags.

Aside from establishment, atmosphere would be something to show when your POV character notices it. If your characters aren't experiencing it, then you're telling your cool idea instead of making the best use of it.

They might be vastly differing characters, but long story short I liked the name and I was 80% sure I was going to wife the Fennekin partner upon starting my game of PSMD. Taguel are fucking radical and it makes my degeneracy unhappy that most of the beast races in the FE franchise aren't actually beast races. They are at least much more animalistic in their human form than the others.

Text to voice it, take notes, then make the changes and run again. Less eye strain and you'll catch more errors by ear than you will by reading with less than complete concentration.

As specifically a Mystery Dungeon franchise, there's a lot of dank chaos magic memes that are not explained in-universe simply because that is the most basic concept which cannot be questioned. In a story you can fuck with it just fine, but it stands that zones where shit is just fucked and unpredictable occur as a regular part of the world. There is a lot of potential in there that, as far as I know (which is nothing), hasn't been touched upon to its fullest yet.

The way Super had it set, that you have to recruit through the orb, actually makes me think that the Pokémon you meet in the Dungeons aren't real. Like in Final Fantasy X, they are just spectral energy that imprints from your subconscious, that is why you can't recruit them anymore. And why I don't feel bad about becoming a road construction service and Hyper Beam-ing everything.

I figured out how to get passed the weirdness of the scene implementation I was leaning most towards, and it allows me to bridge into another scene from the same notes I was trying to jam in there too. Feels good.

Sometimes you wake realize your complex problem has a really simple solution. Even just a single line of dialogue.
