I can't and never will be able to go to my Sun game's alternate dimension because I was unaware Solgaleo was needed to do so and fucked up with it so now I can't cross over.

Even worse. When I caught the Solgaleo it had a shit nature and a) I didn't have an Abra for this and B) I was too lazy to soft reset. I figured "well, fuck. Oh well, I could go grab that Cosmog post-game." and traded the original Solgaleo for a Lunala to fill out the dex. I found out later your game's cover legendary is necessary for the cross over. I hate myself.

If that's the case, retrade Lunala for a Solgaleo.
Then after you get Cosmog, you can level it up to another Solgaleo so you can trade either one of the Solgaleos for another Lunala.

I retraded the Lunala for another Solgaleo and it still didn't work. It has to be the cover legendary YOU encounter in the storyline. I'm effectively locked out.

You can do it with any solgaleo, you just have to make sure its night.
Funny thing, if you have BOTH solgaleo and lunala in your team you can go any time of the day.

You can use that lunala you got in the trade to also go into the alternate dimension, it just needs to be the opposite time of day.

If you have both, you can go to the other dimension at any point in time
