I never thought of it before, but other than the usual autism it's really a critical part of paving the way forward and making the 3D era live up to its potential. I want the overworld to come to life, instead of just being a big colorful void of empty nothingness that feels like it just exists to put some distance between you and the next battle/objective/whatever. NPCs are dull robots, areas and routes are monotonous even in SM, there's really nothing to see, not even some Pokémon in the fucking Pokémon game.
At the very least, optional followers can break up this monotony and give you a little more immersion. It's an game centered around Pokémon, after all, so why would you just keep them crammed into their balls at all times until you need to battle with them?
