It's been over two months and I still can't understand how they fucked these games up so badly.

The difference is that there are barricades all over the fucking game. I Just played ORAS. You can skip Brawly's gym and go to Slateport. You can also go up to Rusturf Tunnel before battling Roxanne, and explore several routes after beating Norman and before challenging Winona. Try finding shit like that in Sun/Moon.

The big deal is the game has barely any player freedom. It's like riding a linear, boring roller coaster. Gen 1, 2, 3, and I think even 4 all had at least a few paths were the player can choose where they want to go first.
