Not any Trainer can just become the Champion. All your rivals, who are strong enough to be the protagonists' rivals, never make it past the E4, with the exception of Blue and Cheren. In the entirety of Pokemon, Blue, N and Iris, only these three people have beaten a Champion. The Champions get so little challenge that they are rarely present in their Leagues. There are thousands of strong Trainers in Unova, and Alder remained the Champion for years, not letting any of them come close beating him until someone brought a Legendary.
If all the hard work and dedication of Trainers Silver, Wally Barry and Serena can be overcome so easily by someone who hated Pokemon battles a little while ago and just became a Trainer for fun, then there's no point in it.
