Eevee is a homage to Fox Squirrel from Studio Ghibli which predates Pokémon in 1984. Hayao Miyazaki based this creature from Fennec Foxes.

Wrong, foxes belong to the Canidea family, but they're in a different genus (Vulpes) than dogs, wolves, and coyotes (Canis).

All of the members of Canis can interbreed and produce fertile offspring, while foxes can only breed with other foxes.

I think you were replying to another poster. I was only refering to the foxes' cat like behaviour. I know that foxes are caniformes in the vulpini tribe.

That's because they're the niche adapters of the Canidea. Vulpes evolved in environments where there was no major Feliforma animal to fill that predatory niche. Much like how Hyenas are Feliform predators that fill the niche left by there not being any major Caniform predators in their environment.

Gen 1 was the best at making actual believable creatures that weren't just cartoon versions of animals.

To this day nobody knows what the fuck specifically Bulbasaur or Nidoking is based on. And it's great. Now we just get cartoon animals.
