Why did Sun and Moon sell so well? Just because of the Pokemon GO hype?
And why do these games get so high ratings, even though they are objectively worse than other main line games? Fucking hell, there isn't even a national dex.

How could this happen? What went wrong?

Because Pokemon is a good series of games and /vp/ just has too high of expectations for a main series game.

They dared to change up the formula, and had an original region to travel through (Kalos was nice but France doesn't feel all that adventurous). The actual quality has nothing to do with the sales anyway.

Nintendo fans don't actually play that many non-nintendo games, and rate the ones they do play really high
Sun and Moon weren't bad games though, and the lack of a national dex didn't really mean much to me. The only thing that really stood out to me as bad in those games was the frame rate at times, and trainer customization feeling like it took a step back in some options

The nat dex absence was a right thing. They are shifting towards the right path.
Other than that, yeah I myself find them the worst installment of the series (contextualizing if course).

I disagree. The Nat Dex is a couple of kilobytes worth of data, and they never even have to update it. It's just dex entries that they've already written.

The National Dex was always an optional goal, done for bragging rights. Why take that away, when it's only the regional Pokedex that ever NEEDS to be completed? They shifted towards the right path 10 years ago.

The problem is the regional dex isn't that dynamic either.
If yer gonna remove the pokedex, for reasons you stated, it makes more sense to remove the entire pokedex.

Well if you look at the statistics not a whole lot of peoplr bought a 3ds during the GO craze, so that's certainly not the main reason. Keep in mind that GF also did a pretty good marketing campaign on youtube.
