We've already seen that the electric trial is more than a black screen now and that the grass trial has some new elements added. It seems like USUM's main priority is finishing up all of the shit in the first game that they obviously didn't have time to implement.

Sun/Moon sold 15.7 million copies in this year. XY sold 16.1 million copies in its generation.

Granted that is lower, but XY had a longer time to get that high. Also, the lowest ever selling mainline Pokemon game was suprisingly Emerald, at 6 million copies.

I doubt USUM will sell that low. Sales figure will break 10 million easy, judging from sales trends. Maybe more since it is a whole lot closer to Christmas.

Don't really give a shit either way. They'll never approach story in the way I want them to.

Exactly what I want, only problems I had with Rotomdex was it was useless and never got to shine as a character. They're giving it actual features and letting you actually interact with it, which both sound great to me.

An Alolan Form will do nothing to save a Pokemon I like, it'll just give me something that looks similar to it that might be good but isn't actually the Pokemon I like. My issue is no Mega Evolutions, but after SM I wasn't expecting them. So all that's left to save a Pokemon is a good Z-Move. Not that any Pokemon I care for will get one, Vikavolt is the only one with a remote chance.

The problem with Trials is they were shoddily put together. If the revamped Trials have more to them, it'll be fine. They're just outdoor Gyms at the end of the day, and Totems are good regardless.

Following Pokemon was a weak gimmick in HGSS, there's potential for it if you implement a more in-depth friendship system and tie it in with Refresh, but they won't actually do that anytime soon when they removed good features like the Memory Girl instead of making it a regular part of your Pokemon's status screen to better solidify them as individuals.

Still miles ahead of anything prior to XY, and who knows, maybe they'll actually fix the shop systems which are the only outright problem I had with it.

New and touched up areas since the lacking map was my main problem with SM, the surfing minigame being basically Soaring + Pikachu's Beach, photo mode, Rotom growth, hopefully more yet to come. Something like the Battle Pyramid would be amazing.

I think that effect is gone. With switch Pokemon game announced and last year it was just Pokemon and 3ds for holidays but now the switch is available. USUM is a after thought really

I think it's fun, gives a bit more replaying value for every run. And finally there's some interaction with people that aren't 2 feet from you. Plus I like grinding, so getting valuable stuff with "easy" grind is a good thing.

Festival plaza is its own level of tedious grinding because it includes RNG elements completely out of your control. If you were guaranteed good facilities after a certain rank it would be palatable but instead they just fling shit at you while you hope for the best.

Pokemon as a franchise always seems to be taking steps forward but is often simultaneously taking steps back in certain areas, eliminating features regardless reception or arbitrarily tying features that many would rather become staples to a single region or game.

On the whole, I would say that I can find something to enjoy about every generation and enjoy replaying them all from time to time. But sometimes I look back and think, "why don't we still have that?"

Little features like follow Pokemon is one example. The trend of handholding and constant healing is something of a concern, for me. I think the move to 3D was overdue, yet when I play the 2D games I do somewhat miss the old style. I am not suggesting we should revert to 2D again and I can accept that it may well be just nostalgia, but I do feel Pokemon lost some of its charm in the transition. But this is a small aside.

Speaking personally I enjoyed SM. I liked the story focus, the region, the ultra beasts and the switch from gyms to trials. But the game wasn't perfect. Even for someone who likes the more story focused games, I felt the early tutorials and cutscenes were over the top. The last island felt dead, and that may well have been the intention, but it did not make it any better to play. Again, for my taste the handholding and healing was obnoxious in this game.

I do not think there are many people claiming SM was perfect, but I think most people found them enjoyable enough and the prospect of a new version that potentially addresses the flaws of its predecessor has a lot of appeal. Very rarely do I see someone declare that SM was perfect, or even exceptional. But even with that perspective I can see how one can be optimistic for USUM.

For multiplayer, yeah, I like being able to access communications at any time without having to hoof it to a Pokemon Center. PSS in XY and ORAS was far better, but the Festival Plaza is still preferable to what came before XY.

It really is astounding though how, everything that could've originally gone wrong with Join Avenue but didn't, went wrong when they revisited it. I just have no fucking clue what they were thinking, unless they purposely made it obtuse to artificially make the game last longer. Sucks for everyone though that in practice, it just dissuaded people from even touching multiplayer altogether. I got more consistent hits in fucking XY on Battle Spot last Fall than I have in SM at any time since its release, and more GTS yields when I replayed ORAS this past summer than I ever have in SM.

SM died before January hit. Forums and chats that were incredibly active all throughout gen 6 started slowing down to a halt after SM launch period.
Multiplayer just fell off the face of the earth quicker than ever.

These games basically killed the community, no wonder the excitement for USUM is so low.

I enjoyed SM and have no hype for USUM. I got what I wanted from that story and feel not making Lusamine the main villain takes away from it. SM completely trounces XY in terms of the main campaign. If you're interested in meta game stuff and raising Pokemon, XY is ideal and SM takes several steps in an unintuitive direction. However, SM is the first successful attempt at narrative focus and characterization the franchise had, and that alone managed to make it a decently fun adventure over XY. I love BW and BW2 but the writing in the former is embarrassing to the point that they basically gave up in the latter. I think of Marlon's attempt at discussing moral grayness and cringe.

Basically SM is written for children while the rest are written by children. The adventure is still a far cry from the quality of Platinum but I still think SM is on par with the better entries in the series like Gen 5, especially is you don't use the exp share. The adventure has a very strong sense of progression with island challenges not feeling disconnected from one another.

Emerald was made only after FRLG over the span of like six months, Crystal came out a year later, Blue came out the same year as Red/Green

Platinum and Yellow are the only ones that took a while, about two years for each from the last release, and Yellow wasn't even very different

N "develops" yes but everything about him is marred by the narrative's premise writing itself into a corner. N's dialogue is an endless string of banalities and concepts too big for the writers to understand. They wanted to tackle the underlying implications of capturing Pokemon and making them fight, but justify it with in-universe logic rather than logic the audience can actually empathize with. N reads like he's written by someone who knows that characters are supposed to develop but doesn't know why. His conflict of character doesn't have any real emotional anchor

N and Lillie have slightly similar character arcs. Both are the subjects of abusive parenting. N however was more ignorant of how little freedom he had, and started out already physically strong. That is to say, already good at battling. He is however, not an engaging character to follow. He finds out his adoptive dad is a scumbag and turns on him, he still holds on to the ideals he was tricked into valuing, only now with your help he sees that Pokemon can be friends and battle partners, things weren't so black and white.

Lillie comes from a broken home. There was a happy family there once, and it descended into chaos and dysfunction. She had no freedom and she knew it, she also has no real strength. All she can do is run away. She lost her father, her brother abandoned her, and her mother is mentally ill. Since the reason as to why Lillie is the way she is has nothing to do with justifying mechanics of Pokemon, it's easier to relate to the character. When she grows as a character and confronts her mother, subtext becomes text and manifests itself through Nebby's evolution. There's a relatable internal conflict there, a coming of age story, doubts over turning against your parent. N has this shit too but he's just on board with all the Plasma garbage until it turns out his dad is evil and he immediately has the physical and emotional power to turn against him with no regrets. It exonerates N of any real responsibility and betrays the shades of gray theme the plot was going for. Lillie's function in gameplay is just being a cheerleader but her story doesn't run on logic and plot beats wholly alien to the audience.
