They're going to have to work really hard to make decent online content. Just "battling Pokemon" and trading isn't going to cut it. They could maybe put something in like a town or region where you can walk around with other players or play mini-games with other players. But just leaving in the same online content we could play for free a generation before would piss everyone off.
Which means that GF will do just that

Recently we've been getting MGSV:PP, inFamous SS, Just Cause 3, Assassin's Creed FC, the Amnesia Collection and much more.
Not to mention the sales that are way better than Steam's sales
