Personally, I thought the original series had an interesting take on child neglect/abuse and fractured families/obsession/ptsd but they couldn't keep deep thoughts for the remakes. :/ Maybe they thought the original was too dark for a children's game.

Same. This was one of the more interesting things in the series to me. One, just seeing Lusamine tumble down. And two, seeing a Pokemon delibately emotionally manipulate a human and even fuse with them. You don't see a Pokemon play mastermind very often. Even with things like Groudon, Kyogre and Necrozma become primary threats they give the impression of a rampaging beast, not a puppet master. Nihilego will remain a favorite of mine because of that, even if it was made into such a minor thing in USUM.

On one hand I like USUM more because it actually puts the fault on Lusamine herself for her actions, and "became overprotective and overzealous after her husband disappeared in an Ultra Wormhole" is more satisfying than "LOL NEUROTOXIN".

On the other hand she's just more interesting in SM, including when she ends up merging with Nihilego. Even if it's lazier from a writing standpoint it's just cooler and more visually interesting.

I like both but I do think it's a shame that merged Lusamine didn't show up in USUM.

Guzma explains how Nihilego has altered her state of mind before the fusion even occurs.
I agree that it didn't start till the time Nihilego appeared in the Aether Paradise though. A lot of people are convinced it happened even earlier but Lusamine seemed genuinely shocked and surprised to see Nihilego for the first time and there's no real reason for her to just put on a show for you.

Agreed with this part. Necrozma was so heavily advertised as a threat acting on its own that during an intrerview with either Ohomri or Iwao, the interviewer quite literally asked whether Necrozma was the main series first evil Pokemon. Disappointing that in the end it just ended up retaining the status quo that any aggressive Pokemon is either just misunderstood or provoked/controlled by humans.

Can we consider Nihilego to be antagonistic and/or legitimately dangerous? Or is this just a case of nature doing nature things? Mother Beast was interesting, but it was so random that it was more of a "what?" moment than anything.

The only reason there was such a big difference with Lusamine is because of Z-Crystals, which for some reason power up and change Nihilego's shape
If anyone else had a bunch of Z-Crystals and fused with Nihilego, they'd end up the same way

I don't think it was being evil or acting out of spite. But it is special in that it is the aggregator, even if it was just doing what it thought it had to do to survive.
Pretty much every other Pokemon in an antagonist role only became that way because someone pissed it off or deliberately manipulated it (Necrozma included). Nihilego was actually the one in control at the end.

Ingame they explained that Nihilego acts purely on base instinct, so it was in all honesty just an animal trying to defend itself, mainly through its emotion manipulating neurotoxins.
This part is interesting because going back to that interview, Ohmori/Iwao answered that whether Necrozma was evil or not was up to the player's PIC. This seemed to imply that Necrozma also acts on instinct, and eats light purely for survival. Unfortunately again, there was no morally grey area Necrozma stood on, in the end it was just keeping with the status quo.

Nihilego is a parasite. It's neurotoxins "stimulates intense feelings of excitement while causing a loss of inhibitions", and seems to do so to protect both it's host and itself. After all, wouldn't you want to just feel good while letting yourself go free on your darkest desires? Why trying to get rid of something that let's you be like that?
Also the Sun dex entry mentions that people with it become violent, which is pretty much both a self-preservation thing tied with the loss of inhibitions.
I kinda wonder how every other villain boss would be like if they got a Nihilego on themselves.

I don't think they may be exactly fatal, Nihilego wouldn't win anything from their host dying while they are attached, it would want them to live as much as possible.

If personally think that, if anything, they would become addictive and would be the lack of continuous neutoxins being injected into your system what could kill you. That's why Lusamine needed to go to Kanto to get treatment from Bill, because if they didn't take the neurotoxins away it would have been a really ugly sight.

I liked her in S/M and while I feel like it's a little too forgiving in USUM in some ways, because it almost feels like they're just like "LOL WE LOVE YOU MOM EVEN THOUGH YOU TREATED US LIKE SHIT AS KIDS YOU'RE OK NOW SO"

Maybe I'm looking at it wrong. But it's nice seeing a Lusamine that isn't batshit insane. Makes it easier for me to want to fug her
