Sugimori stated that gen 7 was going to be simpler than gen 6 by drawing on elements from the original red and green. Where did they succeed and where did they fail?

a lot of the official character art for the npcs look like they've been done by a few different people so i doubt it. Take definitely did the artwork for all the the aether employees. I don't think sugimoori even did the official art for the final starter evos

He still comes up with Pokemon concepts although he is less likely to do the actual/final designs these days. There's an interview somewhere that said Ultra Beasts came about from Sugi wanting to break their internal design rules like never making a soft-bodied animal made out of a substance like glass, or combining opposites like large bodybuilder with a tiny insect.

Sugimori hasn't done the finalized design of every pokemon and NPC ever since generation 1. What Sugimori did do was do the promotional character art of every pokemon and NPC just for the sake of keeping the art style consistent when presenting the game.

This doesn't matter anymore. Different people are now allowed to make promotional npc character art for the characters they designed except for the main characters since since HGSS, (Takao Unno is credited with Kotone's design, but Sugimori did her promotional art. Takao Unno is credited for the designs and promotional art of the Rocket Admins).

Yusuke Ohmura had a heavy involvement both designing and creating the illustrations of NPCs for BW, basically your friends and every gym leader and elite 4. And in BW2 he was even allowed to do the main characters designs and promo illustrations.

Sun and Moon has a lot of characters designed with promo illustrated by Naoki Saito and I believe Aether are by Yusuke Ohmura but I don't have how to confirm it.

So Sugimori doesn't "design anymore". Like half of the cast of generation 1 isn't credited to him. Sugimori didn't even design Pikachu, that was Atsuko Nishida.

I think the final starter evos for gen 7 are slightly simpler than gen 6, gen 5 and gen 4. I don't think the regular non-legendary pokemon designs are any more complex than gen 6's, but the box legendaries(especially when combined with necrozma), tapus and some ultra beasts are. Everything else said in that article is absolute nonsense or lies.

The UBs (including the box legendaries because they are UBs) were designed differently. It's in another interview were they said those were designed by breaking the rules, things they won't do with Pokemon, so they look out of this world.

I don't think the Tapus look particularly elaborate. They are elaborate enough to go with their themes and cultural background but not so much that they stand as a sore thumb. Their color schemes are also simple.

I mean technically Gen 7 designs were pretty simple, Rowlet's an oval, and a lot of Pokemon have a rounded plastic look.

Gen 1's style was more "realistic" than simple desu

Aether is by a guy known by the alias of take. He does most of his art digitally and you can see it in the concept art for the Aether Foundation.

We saw Zygarde Cell and the wireframe of Pikipek. Seemed like they were serious!

And then Magearna was revealed and it was obvious they were just talk.
