How do I get her to stay? Should I be putting out beans or does that just increase the chance of new pokemon replacing it? I already have 3 visiting, one of which showed up yesterday but I haven't accepted it because I'm afraid of fucking shit up.

It's totally random if they stay now. Beans just increase the chance of it showing up. My partner got a shiny suicide cucumber a few weeks ago and it's just a matter of odds. I think you can savescum it if it isn't there when you load up your first save after it leaves/stays but we got it first try so can't be sure

I tried to google but I'm just getting mixed answers. Some say soft resetting works, others say it doesn't.

So is it as simple as load up the game 24 hours later (or is it determined by midnight?) and soft reset until it shows up?

It's not midnight and I'm not sure if it's 24 hours but pretty much. First time you boot up and notice it's there or not, soft reset and try again. It might not work, but there's nothing else.

Alright, if you're still waiting for it, I just want to tell you that if it DOESN'T stay, then immediately close the game without saving.
Put the cart in another 3DS. This may change the outcome and possibly keep the thing.

Well you save beforehand when you find it so that the shiny is there, then I closed the game, then the next day I checked it and the thing wasn't there. I closed without saving after that, then put it in my sister's 3DS. The Pikipek stayed. It's all anecdotal evidence but it's the only time I've seen something work for making them stay. Good luck.

If you really wanted to, you could go out and buy a powersaves just to back up your save file.
Check on the pokemon every hour or so and every time it's still there, save and back up your data. If it's gone, load up the past saves and hope for the best.

Putting the cartridge in another ds should have the same/similar effect as changing the time.

Partly tradition, partly infrequency, and partly autism.
I want you to think about the level of autism it takes to hunt shiny pokemon. Then combine that with the degree of autism that is part and parcel to a "General" thread.
If they were a continuous thing, it would become a septic tank very quickly.

Just before you trigger the battle.

I typically enter, confirm that a legendary is available, see what it is, save, walk right next to the trigger, save, then trigger the fight.

The less time wasted walking into the fight, the better.
