it literally isn't. they didn't have slaves. they didn't have minstrel shows. they got little sambo dolls back during the postwar period from us navy personel, and they took them entirely out of context. as far as japan was concerned they were no different from mascot characters. it's literally the only reason the pitch black face with round red lips image even exists in japan. it has nothing to do with their opinions on black people, they don't even equate the two.
