>>34784337Colo is a great game that was poorly received at its release for breaking the formula. It was marketed in North America as the first mainline Pokémon game on a console. I loved the game when I played it (because I *hated* RS and until FRLG came out, there was no alternative option), so it's nice that /vp/ loves it after the fact, but Reggie Fils-Aime and the Nintendo PR machine made everyone think the game would be on par with the typical 8 Gyms, E4, and Champion level of content, but it's approximately closer to 4 Gyms, E4, and Champ (i.e. about 2/3rds of the length we were told to anticipate).
XD was in response to the poor popular opinion of Colosseum, but didn't really understand why people disliked Colo. It tried to skew closer to 'the formula' in weird ways – so the lead character was younger, the plot was lighter, and a lot more Pokemon options are thrown at you.
XD just ends up being this weird, awkward, 'compromise' game, that doesn't really work. It's timid in its approach because the devs are clearly going to be afraid of losing their relationship with GF and thus their involvement in a multimillion dollar franchise, but you just get the sense that it isn't really as much excitement put into it as was put into Colosseum.
More power to anyone that prefers it to Colosseum, because XD is the content-heavier game, and the Battle Spot is one nifty trick I wish Colosseum had, but other than that, I rank Colo >>> XD.
