If we included console games, then without a doubt either Stadium 2 or Colosseum would be my favorites in the series. I like battles, and I like to have team previews. Honestly, if the Battle Tree worked more like Mt. Battle where you can see the six Pokemon your opponent could have, and they had sets instead of an assortment of Pokemon that they can have 3 of, US/UM would probably be my favorites just because of that, or at least pretty close.

Soul Silver doesn't do a single thing better than Emerald.
Liza and Tate and that game are a bigger highlight than the remake that fixed nothing gameplay-wise.

As much as I don't want to defend ORAS, in many ways it's basically an upgrade from Emerald, while losing out on key locations events.

If there's anything Gen VI did right it was the PSS, and having Dexnav, Soaring, and all the generational quality of life improvements make it a solid game.

And yet even with all of those, it still FEELS like a downgrade, despite doing a lot of things right.

The Star Sapphire romhack is unironically my favorite pokemon experience of all time. It removed the biggest complaint about ORAS, the difficulty, leaving me to appreciate the highs of the game like the soundtrack that much more.

I think it's time people apologized.
Platinum blew it out of the water, but it shouldn't be put next to barebones gen starters like RS/BW/GS.
Slow engine doesn't take away the fact that they were the most loaded primary versions.

Literally the only reason ORAS feels like a downgrade is because it didn't have a Battle Frontier or something equally grand to replace it. They favored story, over gameplay.

There's also just minor things, like Berry Blending not being multiplayer anymore too, the lack of Trainer Hill, Navel Rock, Birth Island, etc. Or double battles not being the priority when players encounter two trainers etc.

The graphics also are a bit weird, even if it looks great on some areas. Blocky aesthetic for whatever reason. Pic related though is my favorite route in any Pokemon game.

I hate 2.5D graphics passionately. If HG/SS had been done more in the style of FR/LG then I would have said SS (for my boy Skarmory). I also think that the originals did the music better.

As for Emerald, I just don't like Hoenn. Trumpet memes aside, I found it to be a stiflingly boring region.

I think it had way more effort put into it as the first sequel to an insanely successful game, and it shows and blows everything else out the water.

Emerald is also gud tho, and soulsilver had some great stuff too but just didn't feel as great as it could have.

Once I'm done with UM I'll look into it seriously. Was going to get Crystal but might not bother if I get HG and B2 - I take my time over Pokemon games, agonisingly so.

Not that poster, but XY has excellent route and dungeon design (Route 13 being a significant exception). The Pokemon distribution is one of the most varied in the series, at least on par with B2W2. If you play with the Exp. Share off, the level scaling can make things somewhat difficult. PSS, Amie, and Super Training are pretty cool features as well. The main issues with XY are the garbage region design, incredibly intrusive story, and garbage characters.
If it got an X2Y2 treatment that jumbled up the region and maybe turned the story into expunging the remnants of Team Flare from positions of power, it could have been a much higher tier game.

IF ORAS had a decent battle facility I'd remove BW2 or Platinum from the list and replace it. Easy leveling is still a problem, but it can be soft fixed by turning exp share off.
BW2 was good mechanically, Unova region and its mons just suck dick. Lentimas and Lucanosa town are god tier I must admit. But Azalea still tops it for me.
Sinnoh has good mons and the region is a huge mountain which is cool, but the places don't really cut it for me. Cyrus is my fav boss, and I enjoyed the implications as to how he became that way. Didn't like Barry.
I also would remove platinum was replace it with FR/LG but hey, that's just because I don't see a point of having FF tier story in a pokemon game.

How should we judge the main series games? On what they brought to Pokemon, or how they hold up in the present? Because you talk shit about GS while mentioning that DP "brought back" things that started there. No other gen introduced more things than GS. That includes Hidden Power.
If its the former, then Gen 5 didn't do much of anything substantial, if its the latter, then it gets really subjective, which is fine I guess.
