Post Pokemon you used on a whim and found out they're really rad.

I found my Venomoth in a Bug Catching Contest and decided to include him to the team. With a great nature and Tinted Lens, he deals considerably grand damage and has been a bro.
Venomoth also looks pretty cute.

Didn't like any of the other Unovamons available before the first gym, so I picked up a Lillipup. Didn't expect it to unleash complete annihilation on everything in its path. The only problem is that it can't learn Sandstorm directly, so its ability is kinda wasted.

Other good surprises include:

You know what's really powerful? Water Spout. Goes well with RestTalk. Could always count on this girl when everyone else had fainted.
> Sudowoodo
Not without flaws, but its attack is surprisingly good. Also my Pokéathlon MVP.
> Wobbuffet
Crazy hard to train, but it does wonders against the Hoenn E4.
> Poliwrath
Access to Belly Drum is what makes the difference here.
> Forretress
Prevented one playthrough from being a complete nightmare - even without Toxic.
> Masquerain
You can actually get good coverage with flying, bug, water, and ice.
> Furret
Kicked ass in the midgame. By the E4, it started to lose momentum, unfortunately.

I kept it on my team. It more than earned its place after that. Surprisingly Sturdy little fucker too. Crustle also wrecked house. Shell Smash is already a good move for competitive Pokemon but ingame with healing items readily available it's even more amazing. Love this Pokemon.

Couldn't think of official game examples since there's more of a controlled influx of stronger Pokemon as you make your way through the games.

I never cared for Zubat before, but thought the others were boring choices. I didn't finish the run, but I love Zubat now.

I'm currently using Skiploom/Jumpluff in Colosseum, and even though I'm pissed off that it misses Leech Seed in this game, it's still being pretty helpful just by being really fast and having Sleep Powder and Mega Drain in a doubles setting. It also works out well if you picked Typhlosion, because Skiploom has Chlorophyll and Typhlosion has Sunny Day. Whenever I get the Solarbeam TM, that shit is going right on Jumpluff.

I always abstained from the Jumpluff line as a kid, but I feel more compelled to use it nowadays. I just wish it had better attack or special attack so that it'd be more usable in-game.

Trust me, I wouldn't even dream to use it if it wasn't for Colosseum being completely doubles-focused. Its stat spread and moveset screams support, and while it can't fulfill its full potential without access to its full moveset, it's still doing me a lot of good.

And I forgot to mention that its flying type also gets me out of a lot of binds and has good synergy with Quagsire being able to spam quakes left and right.

First there is Vileplume. They are Oddish everywhere so I never really cared but in my first nuzlocke in Emerald I didn't really have the choice so I played it and it was one of my strongest mon.

And then there is Swoobat. This was the Pokémon I hated the most because of its design. But I played White 2 with a Pokémon imposed by someone. And she decided that it would be this thing. I didn't like it, it was ugly, frail, it hit like a girl, but I kept it until the end.
And finally, against Iris, the miracle of miracles, it took a hit of +1 Haxorus with 1 HP and KO'd it back, saving my team and offering me the victory.

If still find it ugly but at least it earned a place in my heart.

Shame you feel that way about Swoobat's design, I think it's a cutie. And I'll always remember how my Woobat got the KO on Burgh's Leavanny and evolved from it in my very first White run.

My nigga. I just did a "Moth" themed mono BUg run through a game. Volcarona and Venomoth were both my stand outs. Also used Dustox, Mothim, and Masquerain. Not even sure if Masquerain is a moth but it was close enough. I hope next gen gives us another moth so I can add a sixth and finish off the team.

But to add something new to the thread, Crobat.

I had this same experience with Crobat when HGSS were new, though at the time I just liked that you could breed Hypnosis onto him. Nonetheless, he's still one of my very favorite Pokemon to this day. Nobody would have ever expected shitty pesky little Zubat to become such a force to be reckoned with, but he's really great once you get through the Magikarp syndrome.

I don't think it's ugly, but it does look goofy. I do agree with you about it being weak, though. I used a Swoobat in White when I played it last year, and he was definitely the weakest member of my team, but I still liked him.

Manectric and Swampert were my strongest mons by far. I always kept transferring it forward too. It even had a Modest nature. Not that I knew what the fuck natures were as a kid. Now, more than a fucking decade later I still have it. It has a bunch of ribbons. Got a fucking mega, and it had its IVs bottlecapped. Any nuzlocker will tell you Crobat is the shit, because it's common, evolves early, and is both fast and capable of not dying to a breeze like other fast Pokemon. Also the defensive typing is surprisingly good and from Gen 5 onwards you get Acrobatics which is excellent.

Noibat should have been a friendship evolution so we could have the same experience with Noivern. Noivern is like having only Zubat until level 48 and not having a Golbat phase.

I used it in Gen 4 just for fun, and then I begin to use it in all my teams, ingame or not.

Unlike most people, I find Probopass kind of cute. Maybe because the moustache doesn't bother me and I see it as iron and not hair, just like Dugtrio hair, you know. Well, it's goofy but endearing for me.

I played a randomized FireRed hack once, and got a Solrock on Mt. Moon. Turns out that if you get one in the early game, it kicks ass for a very long time. That moveset is fun as hell and a levitating rock/psychic is really interesting. It became one of my all time favorites in no time.

Eventually, he learned Thunder Wave and became useful for catching mons. Soon, as a Magneton and later a Magnezone, he became my straight-up secondary, next to my starter, and eventually became my primary in certain situations.

Now, Magnezone is an essential bromon in all my teams.

Unfortunately my E4 run ended witg Lance thrashing my team with his overleveled as fuck team.
My Venomoth held his own for a little while, but he was no ATV.
He did he best though.

Doing a Pokemon X playthrough and wanted to try something different. I would of never guessed this thing would do so well. That being said, it was probably the best game to choose it since Bulldoze was accessible once you got to the big city, and it doesn't have access to any ground moves really in its main movepool.
Surprisingly she takes hits for days, and supports the rest of the team by slowing shit down.

Came across him as a rare encounter early in Black 2. I had the decided to make it a run where I use some random bullshit mons that I usually dont, it was a perfect fit.

Its natural bulk and recovery and eventually Double-edge made it actually very dependable in-game.

It was also a run in order to get a competively viable Latios, which it was also good at because of Glare, I've done several runs through games to get single legenderies since then and I've always ran a Dunsparce in all of those. Paraflinching has allowed it to solo several legends or atleast get it to the point where it was capturable.

Ever since gen 6's leak season I've vehemently been hoping for an evo/mega/fairy type/alolan form. Its just a little bit of defence away from being competitively viable. Surely gen 8 will not disappoint me again...
