>Vanilla pre-release mayhemDuring the speculation season, everybody pretty much already had chosen a side of what starter they liked. Most people picked Rowlet, and due to Rowlet being the most popular, owlcucks assumed it'd get the Greninja treatment. Amazing speed and power, great type coverage, a cool design and a borderline broken HA.
>The demo hack fiascoWhen the demo for vanilla S/M came out, some people datamined and eventually hacked it to be able to play the game in full about a month before the games actual release. All that talk from owlfags saying Decidueye was going to be the next Greninja blew up in their face spectacularly when it was revealed that it not only DIDN'T have stats even close to Greninja's, its stats were complete garbage all across the board whereas Incineroar and Primarina both had fantastic stats that complimented their movepool and hidden abilities. Whereas Incineroar and Primarina were both slow and tanky, Decidueye was slow, frail and despite having 107/100 attacking stats, had nary a thing when it came to its special movepool, effectively making the owl worthless. This didn't stop the owlfag from memeing it into OU for a short while though, with them acting like they still won despite the fact that this was clearly memed there because of new toy syndrome. Didn't take long for the owl to start rapidly dropping in the rankings from there.
