In Red and Blue, there are 39 index numbers that have no associated pokemon, so the result in a Missingno.
When these Missingo are traded to a Gen 2 game, they turn into whatever pokemon is represented by that index number in gen 2.
Looking at the index numbers for the Gold Beta, they would become:

So basically what happened was that an anonymous source sent the Pokémon Gold and Silver Spaceworld prototypes (which from here on out will be called GS97, G97, and S97) to a ROM hacking team. As you know, the G97 ROMs were leaked last night.

Fast forward to this morning, some people on a Discord server named Omniarchive, a server dedicated to archiving old Minecraft versions were talking about the leaked G97 ROMs in the #off-topic channel. I was intrigued and jumped into the conversation. As it turned out, two of the members of the server were also members of the ROM hacking group. We talked for a while about it, they mentioned an unleaked set of S97 ROMs and, again, I'm intrigued.

We continue talking, then Hans shows up. An infamous asshole who always gets banned and comes crawling back from the depths of hell on an alt. Apparently he blackmailed one of the members of the ROM hacking group who were also on the server by threatening to release 2010 IRC logs that were supposed to be deleted due to privacy concerns. He said he wouldn't leak the ROMs, but he was lying.

The second member of the ROM hacking group verified that the ROMs were indeed real, and no one had any idea what to do, especially me. I didn't know whether or not I should release the ROMs, especially sense they were the holy grail of Pokémon lost media. I then remembered the earlier G97 leak and from that moment, I knew what I had to do.

well, what are the credentials of this team member? a lot of these pokemon shown earlier in the thread seem so fanmade. not saying the sprites are shit, i like most of them and think they would fit really well into a pokemon red 190 romhack or something. also, it doesn't seem to fit well with cut gen 1s who made it into gen 2. they could have always came later than the cut mons from this alleged leak, but some mons not being in like ttar line which is successive even in gen 1 seems suspect. not saying it's a total debunk for the reason i said earlier.

I checked the code and saw that there are two special animations when sending out Pokémon, a fade‐in used by Hoothoot and a wave effect that is totally unused. Especially when Crikey, Cactus and co. were probably on that Red/Green 40 list. There are 39 Missingno. slots, but one of the cut Pokémon was replaced by Mew. My guess is ones like Crobat, Skarmory etc. who are mostly unchanged are the leftovers from Red and Green.

The pokemon isn't related to Shellder in the beta and that pokemon is in fact Slowking's crown (who evolves from Slowbro in the beta)
I guess the idea was having Slowpoke to evolve into Slowbro, then into Slowking and let the player de-evolve the pokemon into Slowpoke again (the dex implies it can happen, even in gen 1) but allowing Shellder to remain evolved. So it's an evolved Shellder but you can't get it from Shellder

Some collector in Japan who collected prototypes at an autistic level died recently. Many of his prototypes were sold in Japan and the one who got it was in a contact with prototype dumpers in the west and they were able to get it them and did a quick dump. Said team is the one who right now is debugging and data mining said rom and are also working to translate it.

If you have no cursory knowledge of the information we had before the dump, including magazine pictures and what not then I suggest you go to TCRF and investigate yourself before you start saying this is fake. Trust us when we say this shit is real. This is the same Spaceworld Demo many of the first pictures of Gold that were published in Japanese magazines back in 1997. The game itself was back then way different and the only thing it had in common with the what we know as Pokemon Gold today are a couple of Pokemon and some of the artwork for the MC and some of the Leaders. Pokemon Gold had a really long, for the time, development cycle and something happened in around March 1998, probably the release of the Gameboy Color, that made them for all terms and purposes make a new game.

At Spaceworld it was called panel booths. Carts were placed inside locked plastic boxes. During break down multiple of thes carts went missing as did the volunteer staff. Sat on them for years to come. Finally spread them around locally. That’s how the carts were retrieved and the reason for “ why now “ is a signed contract with development firms for classified information is 20 years to the day. A finishing clause prevents another year.

This was ensuring no legal backlash could happen. Also anything after 20 years is open to emulation and is considered a classic. GRBYGSC are commercially available for free and can be used and distributed through any method so long as no monetary value transpires. Technically, GameStop and other Game Stores that follow the rules of The United States and or Ststue Of Limitations considering branding are illegally selling unless they pay royalties to the original creators of the classics.

to be fair it looks like those baby pokemon all evolved at level 12 without friendship shenanigans, which probably means GF wanted to make some pokemon available in the early game (jynx, magmar, electabuzz, ponyta, mr. mime) without making them too overpowered compared to unevolved starters and normal early route derps. I love the beta Kingdra sprite so much. It feels like a much more sensible fit in the Horsea line than the final one we got. Horsea has six tiny head spikes and lots of curves. Seadra's fins become sharp and pointy, as do its head spikes, along with growing an additional one on top. Beta Kingra continues this with even more spikes along with sharper looking fins. Final Kingdra's head spikes have curved edges and are no longer sharp, same with its fins. Beta Kingdra has dragonlike parts like those typical chinese dragon whisker things, fins that look like wings, and possibly arms/claws to go with its new dragon typing. Kingdra doesn't look dragonlike at all and still looks like a seahorse.

What other sprites do you think make more sense than their final counterparts? Not necessarily the ones that look better per se, but the more logical ones.

At Spaceworld it was called panel booths. Carts were placed inside locked plastic boxes. During break down multiple of thes carts went missing as did the volunteer staff. Sat on them for years to come. Finally spread them around locally. That’s how the carts were retrieved and the reason for “ why now “ is a signed contract with development firms for classified information is 20 years to the day. A finishing clause prevents another year.

This was ensuring no legal backlash could happen. Also anything after 20 years is open to emulation and is considered a classic. GRBYGSC are commercially available for free and can be used and distributed through any method so long as no monetary value transpires. Technically, GameStop and other Game Stores that follow the rules of The United States and or Statue Of Limitations considering branding are illegally selling unless they pay royalties to the original creators of the classics.

Anyway, you’re welcome. I won’t ever post here again. But this is from the man who took one of the 25 carts and held onto it.

They really botched this demo.
Just imagine waiting in line to play this and all you fight are fucking Rattata and Caterpie, just like Gen 1, while looking at the back of a Chikorita, which you don't know what it looks like because you're at a fucking demo kiosk and don't want to waste time checking the Pokedex. You'd think they'd have messed with the encounter tables to have you actually face nothing but new Pokemon and maybe pump your started up to level 15 or something so you don't waste a huge amount of time in battles.

ROM hacks tend to look like the original ROM in terms of memory layout and shit (which is why patches are so efficient, the counterpoint is something like Prism which iirc is bigger than Crystal's base ROM). Garbage from either Red or Gold (because it would have to be one or the other, even if it were JP) would be present. So you could open up Gold and Red JP and the Gold 97 ROM and just literally do a visual inspection if you had the autism.

Plus shit like the EXP bars, the bag, the color, are at a state in between Red and Gold. It's unlike either final build, both on a surface and an internal level.

Spaceworld was not for Trade Markets, that was Electronics Project and held with stock holders of major gaming industries that were up and coming.

Also, they had full fledged demos with time limits of up to 25 minutes, not 15, and during that time a volunteer would access the menus needed to bump a players level up so to give them a chance to explore or fill their bags with special items.

Spaceworld was a thriving real convention in its own right and not closed off privately, at all, in any sense. I have been to every Spaceworld both abroad and in the U.S which eventually was over taken by e3 and an early PAX. You’re wrong on so many accounts it’s not even funny..

Investors were hardly present at Spaceworld; this was a Janice for children to see and play, not investors. Most investors of that era, my era, didn’t even give a shit about the games. Didn’t care about what capsule monster or Pokémon was. They wanted figures. Still do. They weren’t kids and they didn’t want to try the game out.

So get your facts straight before trying to sell bullshit to the majority. There are 60 year olds on /vp/ who saw the both of Gaming Conventions and other electronic art crafting projects.

About as true as anything else said here. I've also read that TCIF apparently had somebody who had connections with a Japanese source and were able to get the cartridge dumped and the ROM from them. Seems more likely then some anon randomly dumping a rare prototype on a discord for no reason.

I think a lot of people care how the ROM came to the internet, but not which beta kiddie clicked the download link first. We care about who actually posted the very first download link and where he got them from. The story of how the carts ot ROM data came into the dumper's possession is interesting.

I know from first hand experience how easy t was to obtain these carts and how the Japanese Represenatives just left them laying about or their personal game boys sitting on a desk then walked away. Official devices made for developers were taken from a Spaceworld in every department. There were no cameras that really worked well and no one game a shot shot securing games, if any one called out a thief they just disappeared into the crowd.

It’s really easy back then, things didint change until the digital era. When carts were finally removed with consoles being trackable, that’s when information became scarace. However, you can bet your bottom dollar that in Japan and the United States, if there was a cart with a demo or a trackless console premiered at Walmart, Toys R Us, Seiyuu, Otaku Broker, Duty free stores then you can bet someone has official merchandise they stole from the company with all sorts of data not scrubbed.

Often times, legends and mythicals that got sent out via cart were done so on previously used carts or those with data from Spaceworld and plenty other sources

There’s no telling what you’d find at Toys R Us’s backshipment wharehouse and same with stores across Japan that hosted Gen 1-3; I would hunt for those and you’ll find exactly what I’m talking about.

Black or Solver carts, usually bigger than Game boy games with a wider top and something written across that states useage periods and when/where to return them too

1. No one in the rom hacking community has tools or documentation to modify japanese gold and silver to this extent

2. No one in the japanese rom hacking community has the tools or documentation to modify red/green to this extent either

It's definitely NOT an english based rom because if it were then you'd be unable to trade with red/green/blue/yellow, which some anons have successfully done without repercussions like the pokemon turning into missingno or other glitches due to games being unable to interact due to code being moved around for international releases and touch ups.

4. because of 3, it is without a doubt japanese in origin and not a result of someone who knows japanese modding the english version of red/blue or gold/silver

Let me go through the old polaroids and the boxes in the attic. I may have to call my son and daughter over, have he grandkids come too. And to answer your question, I did indeed play these a fair bit and was confused when the other games came out because the world felt smaller and the Pokémon were noticeably different.

This thing - beta Qwlfish (which turns out to be pretty much identical to the final design). It is not legally available in this demo. You must cheat to actually see it.

-a GB development cart (I have several myself)
-an EPROM with a manufacture date prior to the date of the event (I have some)
-Knowledge of what Nintendo EPROM labels looked like (there are examples online right now); could be reproduced; possibly not even necessary because they could have used whatever for labels
-Some aging to the labels (easy enough)
-Believable native Japanese handwriting skill to toss some handwriting on the EPROM label

How do we know this might have been the final Pokemon. I mean It does seem that the original Pokemon Gold was going to include all the Japanese Islands or at least most of the main Island and parts of Hokaido and Kyushu but that alone doesnt mean it's going to be the last. Hell Zelda II included a reduced version of the First map as well and it was definitely not the last.

No what you are describing is completely irrelevant to the proof in the actual data, both content and far more importantly the structure of the data, that is nigh impossible to replicate by essentially anyone but people who were working on the original software with GameFreak's hardware in 1997.
Denying this as proof of authenticity is like someone being brought in for a crime with forensic evidence, eyewitness accounts, a clear motive, lack of alibi and ownership of the murder weapon all tied to them and responding to this with "well maybe they have identical twin even they didn't know about."

In fairness, we technically already know at least part of the story, particularly since Nintendo has confirmed and re-confirmed various rumors that have swirled since back in the day since Iwata's passing in 2015, among other sources.

For starters, we know that since the founding of GameFreak, the studio was notoriously tiny and terribly inexperienced, to the point that they had trouble managing delays and their output was a mess. Even in Japan, it barely passed muster.

However, in '96 when Nintendo made overtures to releasing overseas, we know that at the time GameFreak employees basically just shrugged and admitted they were too shoddily made and they couldn't do it, prompting Iwata to basically rewrite much of the games to get them into the state where they could be localized.

From there, we also know that things were the same with Gold and Silver, and only got worse as development went on. Their four man team simply couldn't handle the scale of the games. This is something we can see from the world's map. It's incoherent, poorly laid out, and really just nonsensical. Kanto is barely recognizable and Iwata eventually had to step in again and basically overhaul their code and implement a compression algorithm to dramatically reduce the size of the game to make their plans even remotely feasible.

We can also speculate that because of Iwata's help, being able to properly include the fullsize Kanto just highlighted the other issues present in this version of Johto's layout.

What we don't know, likely never will, and can't speculate as easily about is why they changed the design language so dramatically. Scrapped Pokemon is an easy answer and it's likely they scrap a ton of designs each generation. But of the design language, the closest we can really speculate is about if Kanto made them rethink Johto's design language.

But it's obvious Iwata had an impact in that, as these demos are positioned right when he was involved in the project.

i think its from the way the world map is structured as well as the pokedex. it's designed like a 'world tour' and wildly varies from how rbgy were structured and acts like a 'last hurrah'. also, if you notice that the dex is comprised of mostly gen 1 evolutions and pre-evolutions and serves mainly to expand upon gen 1 rather than try to make something entirely distinct and new which is what they went with in retail gsc

The Japanese were very strict on keeping their technology and platform secrets out of their hands, but oddly enough didn’t say much against Americans. Was the stigma of the times.

I feel that that somewhere in development they decided to scale down on the scope. Instead making it about all of Japan they just chose Kansai + Kanto. The Kanto map that we know on the official finished product feels it was done after they made Johto. I don't know if it was Iwata telling them to scale it down, but it seems they did either way. That being said it would have been cool to have a Pokemon game with a scope as big as what they originally planed.

It's real. In the debug mode you can access a menu to choose the bike or skateboard. It glitches out though you move up and down unless you override movement with B. Also while in debug mode the bike doesn't move at double speed, but the music changes.

Half the sprites look clean and would fit well in gen 2 with minor color swapping and half of them have the classic gen 1 look with half the outline being a 2ndary color. I personally think these are halfway revised pokemon and i totally think beta bayleef is from another set of 3 that were scrapped faster than the rest

We have dissasembly of Gen I and Gen II so if you have coded before all you need to learn is a bit of assembly and you would be able to get your feet wet in terms of romhacking. I made my personal hacks such as adding later Gen mechanics such as adding Fairy type and what not, editing trainers and rudimentary map editing. It wasnt that hard but I never uploaded anything cause I made it for myself just for fun.

However, what is obvious is these demos were still current by November of 1997, when Space World was held, and GameFreak had a busted map and virtually nothing pinned down to even show for it. Which was before Iwata stepped in since after Red and Green he moved on to the first Pokemon Stadium.

We can be particularly certain about this since the demos are already maxing out the storage capacity of the Game Boy/Color. So whenever the decision to scale back came, it was before Iwata came in, probably because they already knew they were fucked. In an Iwata Asks they described being 'snowed under' by the games when Iwata came in.

Ultimately, whether Kanto or Johto were done first when they delayed them a year and went through re-designing things, it's difficult to say but we do know Iwata wanted them to include Kanto properly, rather than being condensed.

(As an aside, while I am not sure that scope is any more feasible now, I have been hoping for quite awhile that GameFreak decided to make another multi-region title. For me, I'd really like to see post-Sun/Moon Kanto/Johto to see how that needle moves again. But I wouldn't balk at returning to an expanded, multi-region Hoenn).

It is Japan. The town map is pretty much Japan but flipped a bit. They even have Hokaido up North-East and Kyushu on the West side.

Playing through the story hacked ROM now, hyped as fuck. I don't speak too much Japanese, but I think this is a screen that has to do with giving your mom a nickname. Wasn't this something that was left in the code of the final game, too? Something else interesting is that Silver is the one who asks you about it.

Im a bit confused, so this was a demo, but there's like tons of content in this, i'd expect it to have like 5-10 minutes of gameplay but to me it seems like a fully fledged game, if i am wrong please correct me because i think im having false hope on that and think that its a full game ready to be played.

It was (presumably) an altered version of the current build at the time. It's much easier to just create a gated demo area than it is to scrub everything in the ROM, or worse, build one from scratch.

I'm playing through right now, and there isn't really much to do. There isn't any script or dialogue in the game beyond where the demo is supposed to end, and it only plays two tracks (Route1 and Viridian City). No wild pokemon beyond that point either.
Exploring through the map is really fun though.

personally i think the best option is literally just adding these mons in to a gold/crystal rom
the current region seems kinda scratchy and incomplete but theres enough to basically just add the gsc story without needing any rewrites

The reason the older pokemon games had good story it was because it was grounded to pokemon reality. The pokemon world is pretty much the same as ours except that pokemon exists and everyone is nice, but for some reason GF decided to turn the series into a high-fantasy RPG, now dont get me wrong i do love said RPGs but i dont want them mixed with pokemon.

Being a kid that just got their starter pokemon and went on an adventure was more than enough to keep you interested, yet here we are with doom's day devices and aliens, what the fuck happen?!

You have to load a map with the demo area tileset, then use walk-through-walls to traverse the map without going through any warps and reloading a map. If you do this you can encounter Pokemon. You'll have to make a savestate before your first encounter though, because as soon as you end a battle the tileset will reset to the default for that area and you won't be able to get encounters.

Not sure if you mean the radio towers, but the burned tower seems to be something entirely different. A Ho-Oh statue is in what seems to be the tin tower though.

yea idk what happened with the escalating odds. it was just a nice, simple coming of age adventure. maybe they just thought legendaries had to be more involved than just being hidden off somewhere. with the gold silver remakes they basically shoehorn you into getting the mascot when they were entirely optional before. more fun to find legends organically than as a set piece for the story imo

Gen 2 was all about lore, legends and tradition, the remake events were nice but yeah making the mascot capture mandatory was a bit sigh. But indeed the stakes were raised tremendously since Gen 4 and it didnt feel like a pokemon game but more like a high fantasy rpg like i said before. I want to think that its not nostalgia since these things have indeed changed for worst and i dont see anyone approving these changes.
