No season was ever really that great, but some are pretty decent.
The first (Kanto) is good, so is Jotho, Hoenn and Sinnoh are actually quite good sometimes, and Kalos is okay as well.
Just don't watch the Black&/White or Sun/Moon anime. They are boring.

It's not very good. Maybe it'll get better? I'm 29, started watching and playing when Gen 1 first came out. I'm not a genwunner, I love all the games. Started watching from Episode 1 going through Bulbapedia's "major events" tab for each ep and selectively screening out boring and filler episodes where nothing happens. At first it was ok because the nostalgia (I guess) but by the time I got to Gen 3 it started to wane. Now that I'm on Gen 4 Dawn is so soulless and everything feels so formulaic at this point it's infinitely harder to ignore than it was in say, Gen 2 episodes. At this point I'm determined to stick it out, but it's gotten to the point that I will run some episodes with 0% volume and just have it in a small window as I shitpost or watch YouTube just for the 'aesthetic' of Pokemon. I pretty much only pay attention during cool battle scenes, really cute moments. I make sure to watch the movies in Japanese with sub because the animation is actually good, and you can pirate them in HD. By the time I get to the X/Y episodes or S/M or whatever maybe my habits will change but this is my blog post.
Honestly, I think you could get away with only watching the movies and maybe selected episodes of particular gym fights or moments from the games you're curious about. Pokemon Origins and Generations is way better.

Kanto and Johto have some really good episodes, but not for action.

AG is bland as hell but responsible for fixing the trainwreck Johto caused.

DP is the most kino saga. Amazing rival, Ash is competent and the best strategist he's ever been, Dawn's story is equally engaging, strong sense of continuity within itself and other sagas, and Ash uses reserves. The pacing goes to hell in a couple stretches though.

BW is cancer.

XY is good if you're a kid that likes shonenshit like Naruto or if you like shipping.

Don't care about XY.

Yeah this is pretty much how I felt when I watched them all in order from the start. I don't know of it was burnout because everyone else claims its great but DP wasnt much fun and AG was completley forgettable.
Well if I have any suggestion for you, it's to just skip BW, when you get to XY and SM it's all uphill, and the show gets pretty damn good, better than it's been before besides maybe Kanto.

Someone posted here that the new Gold/Silver beta leak was uniquely impressive because you get the sense that the staff are putting their blood, sweat and tears into the game so they aren't out of a job. It's the desperation of knowing your end product isn't a "sure thing" to succeed. I feel like that logic can also apply to season 1 of the anime. It's not "good" but there was a considerable amount of experimentation and an attempt at development that was lost the minute everyone knew this franchise wasn't going anywhere no matter what they did with it.

First half of Kanto for nostalgia value and its quirkiness compared to the rest of the series. Much of the same "early installment weirdness" you get from comparing RBY to the later games.
Starts getting more stupid in the second half with frankly unconvincing logic of the characters (Ash in a Mr. Mime costume is kidnapped by Team Rocket, Ash's mom goes: it's ok, they'll just let him go once they realize he isn't a pokemon. Really?). Still, the more insane and stupid the episode, the better (Clefairy UFO episode)
Ash starts relying on that shitty jobber Charizard and naturally jobs hard at the pokemon league because of him. Fuck Charizard.
Misty becomes a joke over the course of the Kanto arc. First she has that stupid faggot Psyduck hobble her at every occasion and then she just becomes a wallpaper holding that useless shit Togepi. And if you thought "no Psyduck I didn't want you go back in the pokeball" gets old, just wait until the James and Victreebel """joke""" repeated every fucking episode.

Orange Islands resembles the first Kanto season a bit, because they had to do a filler season with no material and needed to get a bit creative. Misty is still useless though and you have that fat faggot Tracy instead of Brock.

Johto is filler city

Haven't seen first half of Hoenn, Advanced Battle is about as banal as predictable as it gets but you do have a few interesting episodes that are clearly a cut above the rest of the morass of mediocrity that is the Pokemon cartoon (Magma/Aqua arc, Ralts episode). Ash jobbing at the league is incredibly easy to predict, and May loses the contest shit too. The stupid fucking James/Victreebel shit is repeated every fucking episode here too, only with Cacnea. The main upside of this season is that it's still 4kids.
Battle Frontier is when 4kids stopped doing the dub so don't bother watching.

Didn't bother picking up anything since as the formula and how they were going about it weren't to my tastes. Had originally ignored SM until I caught a few subbed clips off yt and saw they changed up the formula so decided to give it a shot. I've no doubt they'll go back to the old trite "Meet regional gym leader and noob trainer, travel region, need to kick gym leader buddy's ass for a gym badge, help noob trainer not be so noob, lose league, go home" formula again next time out so I'll probably drop it again after SM finishes up.

Would have been 100x better if they had switched protagonists regularly. It would make taking new directions easier, while being able to plan more of a story for each part. Also would just be nice if Ash had gotten some closure instead of being stuck on the same journey forever. I could see people looking back on each season with more fondness if it was a separate story that did its thing and then left.

I suppose Ash had just become too prominent in the brand, but he could have had a side role or been the star of movies.

Pokemon doesn't have a story. There is no conflict. You just do your gyms and fight the league, and with no reason other than to do it. Even then, you're accomplishing nothing because even if you can become the best there is, you won't be able to keep it. You will fall at some point. There's nothing to do.

The whole Anime is rather terrible from start to finish, though the OS is probably when it was the least stale. AG was the first time you had the start over again thing and is rather underrated, DP was a copy of AG done worse with TR & Brock but tried to make Ash a bit more mature, BW was a tryhard OS, XY was a tryhard DP, and SM is the first time you have a school thing but the Series is still predictable as ever.

The dub of the Series however has gotten worse, though- TPCi dubbing had awful voice acting, intros, and replaced too much of the Japanese music compared to even 4Kids let alone the Japanese Version, holy shit, the dub is pure cancer nowadays: don't watch it.

The original season was really good. Some really great humor. Then the series became very, very stale from Johto and onwards, until the later parts of D/P. B/W was awful, but it had some good humor here and there, too. Cilan almost saves the show for me. Then X/Y and S/M have been really good so far.

It happened because they (Pokemon) know they can get away with slapping any shit on the screen by now and kids will still watch or defend the newer stuff, unfortunately.

If the audience were to not defend the newer stuff and demand higher quality by not watching, then we'd see a change, but it'll never happen because some people will make
bad excuse after excuse to justify the newer stuff relative to the older stuff.

I only remember stopping watching during Johto because of how fucking boring it was. If you had watched it, you'd hardly believe Pokemon had a future beyond that. I think all that shit from Gen 3 onward probably sucks less, simply because they're not starving for new Pokemon.

And you'd be wrong since it's still the same thing in every other succeeding saga. Johto gets way too much hate in general: just because of the boring fillers, doesn't mean everything was bad.

Gen 3's Anime is fine, after that everything goes to shit with the dub, Gen 4 & 6 are only watchable in Japanese because the dub is absolute trash for DP & XY (as well as SM now, too).

The Series has not ever been good, nor is it good now, either.

DP and XY are great if you watch the dub, not just the voices, but the damn music changes make all the difference. Scene that were epic or touching in the original are drowned out by the dub replacement music.

Watch any scene with Ash Greninja powering up in Japanese XY, and compared it to the dub scene, it's so boring

Also, they totally rewrite the scripts in DP & XY dubbed for anything Team Rocket says and there's a lot of douche-y slang TPCi adds in the scripts to boot for Ash & co.

DP & XY are ruined by the dub, watch the Japanese Version for both Series if you want to enjoy them.

SM is not great to start with, but the dub has hit its worst point ever with it (TPCi is now worse than 4Kids at it too), now visual edits are back in addition to those problems.

The dub music is only for the cheap as fuck dubbers to make royalties and uses cheap synth whereas the Japanese music uses orchestral music and does remixes of the game music, and the dub voices from DP onward are cancerously bad. Kids sound like women who smoke, teens who sound like old men who take a huge shit, young adults that sound like valley girls or goofy old men with colds, it's all shit.

Even the intros suck: they cut them into 30 second shit that is completely forgettable and generic in the dub, with off key singers. TPCi is cancer: as dumb as 4Kids was, they weren't this awful with Pokemon.

I agree, it would have been great if the characters were able to age and learn and develop and have plot lines that went somewhere. Ash could easily have taken on the older mentor role of the group, teaching the new 10 year old first time trainer and pulling out his op team when things got hard. It could have been great, could have been something people enthusiastically watched forever instead of just something only children watched, for a little while during their gen, til they grow out of it.
