Why aren't there more gameshark codes out yet? We already have a walk though walls code and an item modifier code.

We need a gameshark code that works with warp points. This would be absolutely invaluable and possibly access extra areas we can't on the overworld.

I'm the anon that originally posted the item codes, and I tried for probably a solid hour trying to decipher what the fuck was going on with the game's warp system, but I got nowhere. I've found the map data in the RAM, but got nowhere in figuring out how it's assigning exits. I'll take another stab at it though if people really want these codes.

I've found an oddity when using the walk through walls code.

If you use the walk through walls code the beta provides you, you bounce off of areas you can't access. If you use the gameshark walk through walls code, you can go to the "bounced off areas" but the game crashes. On the areas you DON'T bounce off of but still can't access, NEITHER of the codes will let you access it which is strange since the gameshark code should let you access it (thus crashing the game) but it doesn't let you still.

Weird.

What I would personally like to see if for them to clean up the current beta maps, do an english translation of what we already have, like with the intro story and build from there. A lot of what they need seems to already be in place for the most part, they just need to fill in the gaps.
But we all know that they won't because fan shit like that rarely ever does.

He's just talking about doors and stuff. From the game code's perspective, walking on a doorway only takes you somewhere if there's an invisible "warp" tile pointing to another map.

Red/Blue launched in September '98, well and truly after these sprites were finished. It's entirely possible that the sprites were made for Blue (a lot of them match the poses of the frontsprites from Blue) but either weren't finished in time or they ran out of room on the cart.

Indeed. Most fan hacks, even recreation of other games tend to add extraneous characters and stories that read like a bad fan fiction. I feel that if someone or a team were to partake in this endeavor of recreating Pocket Monsters 2 how it was intended they should stick to how GF would have scripted the story. Don't start putting creators OC with dark and tragic backstories or any of that nonsense. Keep shit simple.

Here's a bit of help. From what I was able to read the story starts with Gold hearing that someone in Kanto was able to complete the Pokedex in his Province and that made him want to try to do it for all Japan. Basically he was like, if some kid could do it why can't I. We know that Silver is not a bad guy but Gold's neighbor and also wants to do that. The story starts with Gold receiving an email from Oak and when he tries to find him he goes outside to be stopped by Green, the same way Oak stopped Red and takes Gold to the Silent Hill lab. With Silver there Oak gives both a Pokemon and Pokedex and the adventure starts.

Pokemon wasnt released to the west until September 1998. From what I gathered, Iwata was the one who worked localizing Pocket Monsters Blue into Pokemon Red and Blue because GameFreak at the time only had 4 programmers who were working with Pocket Monsters 2. Also fun fact, Iwata also rewrote the Pokemon Battle code for Pokemon Stadium JP by himself after reading the source code of Pocket Monsters Blue he was a pretty good programmer.

That's already a good and simple story, so they could leave it like that. I wouldn't even mind if whoever makes a fan hack out of this decided to scrap the Team Rocket plot line, for example.
Just having the entire region accessible as it is (even with the huge unfinished areas), and being able to catch, train and evolve the beta guys would be more than enough for me.

Red completed the kanto dex, Gold and Silver both want to do it as well but for all of japan (johto?)
team rocket shows up and you beat them up like Red did, you become the champion and have the big climatic battle with red in Kanto
the reason i think FR would be the best option is because you can do everything with it
add a fuckload of pokemon, physical/special split, mega evolutions, really anything

Could Turban have been intended to "all off of a Slowking in the game, and become a pokemon for you to take? I think it being an ingame event pokemon rather than a wild one would work better.

It's okay to spice things up a bit but as long as you don't go into cringey fan fiction territory it should be fine. What's important is to keep it to the spirit ok the originals. Here's a bit more info I was able to gather from reading all the threads and digging into the spreadsheet and TCRF page. It's a bit of lore that could help filled in the blanks of the story.

The Elite Four is composed of Misty, Bruno, Giovanni and Lorerei with Lance as champ. Red is one of the Gym Leaders and there's still a Team Rocket take over. Giovanni is shown to be at the JOPM Radio Tower so the question is, Is Giovanni there as TR boss or trying to stop them? I mean he is an E4 after all. I feel that going from the end of Pokemon Gen1 we can gather that Giovanni is not evil in Pocket Monsters 2, but that is my take on it. I feel that certain characters who were not good like Blue and Giovanni had a change of heart after losing to Red and that would have shown in Pocket Monster 2. Also Red is a Gym Leader so the question is why did he chose that over being the Champ or an E4.

Controls which exit in that map you'll leave from. Usually don't use this, but it could be useful for some specific maps

I doubt it. The people who hate Go2 are not their biggest moneymakers, and I'd be surprised if GF listened to Internet criticism at all. Most companies don't.

While various exits bring you to different exits, I don't know how it would bring you to different maps?

I'm playing on the Gold Debug ROM, and these codes work from fresh boot into Demo mode. You'd be put into the wrong exit leaving from the 2nd floor player's house (fixable by my third code), but they work here. Not sure what could cause these to be a different map on Gold Debug, but Silver Debug might have some RAM allocation differences?

No thanks. Aside from making Lopunny a permanent member of my party the gimmick is pretty retarded. They should do something similar to like they did in Sun/Moon where the beta pokemon are Johto/whatever the official regions are called forms of the already existing Pokemon. That way you can explain the different appearances of Pokemon like Girafrig and Cleffa. And then just add in the ones that are completely new or changed to the point where they might as well be like the starter Pokemon.

RG beta is pretty interesting. The bike route used to end at the north of Fuchsia. Also, there used to be a town or some fly point in that water area north of the bike bridge. I think gym leaders were slightly different too.

Is there any meaning to Ruins of Alph being in roughly the same location as Hiroshima? Are the unknown people who died in the atm bomb?! (Iknow there's different cut lore now but still it is a beta so this is a beta idea possibly)

It reminds me how people would burn shadows into a wall after the nuke got them. And people's spirits can turn into ghosts.

Plus its a western language overwriting japans culture.

I think it's fairly safe to say that this city is Hiroshima. It's in the right place, has links to the sea and the Ruins of Alph actually look like the real life A-Bomb dome ruins.

Making round buildings is hard with tilesets for a gb. Look how body the buildings are. Plus they probably wanted it to be subtle. You can't really argue against the location being the same as Hiroshima. I dont think there are any other real life things in Pokemon that are one for one recreations even back then.

Hmm. Are there puzzles on the walls of extinct Pokemon because the temple is ancient, or is it because the Unknown have a connection to things that went extinct. In a way a ,eye of falling from the sky and killing dinosaurs is similar to a nuke. There could have been some deeper story planned here too.

Honestly, I gotta share this with you

I'm a gen 2 kid. My first gameboy was GBC, and I had both Silver and Crystal (I still keep them to this day, everything is functional)

for me the greatest thing about all this Gold '97 discoveries, beside the unreleased pokemons, is finally figuring out the mysteries of the Unown.

I remember that in Silver I just couldn't understand tf was supposed to be that Unown Cave. I mean, sure, it had puzzles in it, they even expand them a little in Crystal too, but what was the point of releasing all the letter Unowns into the cave? literally nothing happened when you were done with it.

I specifically remember that I thought that perhaps it had something to do with Ho-oh, that maybe he was supposed to appear there (as I had the Silver version, in an era without internet to check and figure out that it wasn't suppose to appear at all), but when I found out that it didn't I thought it was extremely weird. the fact that it simply appeared in the second tower was even more odd to me.

Now, with this Beta in our hand, I think I can figure out what's happening here-

> so in the Pokemon lore the Unowns were probably real people (or pokemons), The Ruins used to be their homeland, but it was all destroyed in a war long ago, and they died as victims of it.
> Ho-Oh revived those dead bodies of people/Pokemons back to life as the Unowns (just like the beasts).
> Since then the Unowns lurk in the ruins.

It makes sense for couple reason-
1. The Ho-Oh puzzle in the original Silver+Crystal (otherwise, why not Lugia puzzle? why Ho-Oh at all?)
2. Even in the official GSC, the researchers stated that the language is ancient and they can't decipher it just yet.
3. The resemblance of the cave in the beta to the Hiroshima ruins
4. kind of a reach, but the 3rd movie had Unowns that were related to the little girl's mother. they basically reacted to a dead person.

I forgot to add- the other two puzzles are Kabuto and Aerodactyl- Both are ancient Pokemons from different time in History, and both were extinct. So it's them + Ho-Oh.. it can't be just a random decision from GF.

Literally just call it Japan. Before they re-thought the game it was probably like gen 1, meaning region names are closer to the real world. You know, Kanto, America and Africa.
And yes, I'm pretty sure they do mention Kanto in gen 1, it's just that it only happens like once. I think it was said by the rival's sister when she gives the map.

Because it's the easily recognizable slightly exotic international standard and far more practical than trying to make the concept work with any Japanese scripts, 26 variations of one near useless gimmick Pokémon is already a huge commitment.
It's a neat idea to consider but people immediately start making any connection that pops into their head and goes into Game Theory tier bullshit
The most you could say is that maybe there was a town analogous to Hiroshima and they decided to put their "ancient weird gimmick thing mini-dungeon" there, for reasons known only to them, but spinning this into some elaborate social commentary/creepypasta bullshit is ridiculous.
Game Freak isn't known for their subtlety, look at Victini for how they actually played out something like this concept.

The ancient humans appreciate the Pokemon's wisdom, even though back in the day they didn't make friends with them (as the line "We humans must learn to walk in harmony with them" suggest). So maybe it's a suggestion that the pokemons didn't become friends of the humans, because they were in war.
The humans learned from the pokemons and from their own self-mistakes, and departed (died?) when something major happened (Hiroshima).

I just realized another part of this puzzle. Pokemon is clearly partly inspired by Godzilla right? Pocket monsters. Monsters = Kaiju
The most Godzilla feeling Pokemon is Tyranitar who debited in this game. He's a ground Pokemon. Godzilla was inspired by Hiroshima and developing of the nuclear bomb. Tyranitar is like irradiated ground. Although he wasn't in the beta maybe it's a happy coincidence. But at least bringing this up shows how ingrained Hiroshima has become in pop culture and kaiju stuff for Japan.

One more thing I want to add I think gamefreak were going to retcon it in heart and soul anyways judging by the sinjoh ruins. It seems like they didn't even really add it to the final gold and silver games either, but maybe the symbolism was still there.

It's just now we know their origin as an idea. Possibly. And if you're convinced that they are the shadows on the wall of the victims of Hiroshima. Either way its like the creators monument to Hiroshima which is pretty neat.

I can see how it could happen again in gen 2, but it was probably dropped from the official GSC for the same reasons Octillery isn't wearing his tank armor anymore- Pokemon was a major hit in the world, and 'Murica is scared of innocent kids becoming violent because of the game (it was a valid fear back in the '90s and '00s, remember GTA?).

So while Lavender was somehow still acceptable, a straightforward "war" theme was not. I believe Ho-Oh original storyline was revolving around that war, and it's job as a peace bringer/Reviving the dead.

Something interesting I noticed in the data is that nearly every Gen II Pokemon defaults to 50 base Special Defense, including the ones that otherwise have an established stat spread. The Gen I Pokemon all have set SPD values (some different from the final), and even Ho-Oh is set to 50 when it otherwise defaults to 100 across the other stats.
The only exceptions are Rai, En and Sui which have values of 98, 99 and 97 respectively. They also all have Special Attack values of 125, with the other stats being a mixed set of other values. On top of that, aside from their SPD they share the same set of stat values with Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres (in different combinations, like the Eeveelutions). So maybe the reason they're the only ones with SPD values is because they were basically copied from the birds who already had those values established, but then why were they tweaked so strangely?
In the final build the dogs have a different stat spread than the birds, but something similar happened with the Johto starters having the same redistributed stat set as their Kanto counterparts. It's cool to see evidence of this "technique" in progress in the demo.

TL;DR not really anything important, but it seems like this demo was created at a very specific point in the implementation of the Special Split and there's some interesting clues left behind.

Lugia didn't exist. Ho-Oh was supposed to be equivalent to Mewtwo, but Lugia was rushed into the game when the 2nd movie was already in plan. The reason you don't see Lugia in the beta is because it was commissioned specifically for the movie.

So any lore in the official GSC surrounding Lugia (which isn't much desu) was created only after this beta, therefore irrelevant.

I doubt we'll get anything better from this demo than we already have. All the maps are missing scripts, all NPCs are missing lines, all trainers are missing their party data, the most of pokemon are missing their stats and we physically have no way to learn what all these were supposed to be.
The best we will get is a translated demo that has like 10 minutes of gameplay and that's it. It was fun while it lasted, but it's time to move on.

That's because that is a png. The actual sprite data in the game is probably smaller because they don't need the png header and they can use a more effiicient compression algorithm for these specific images because of how little color is in them, their size is fixed etc.

Yeah, but made quicker with throttle and save states. There's no disassembly on the matter yet, so that's the next best thing.
