How do we fix Gamefreaks design mentality and get them to go back to the early gen style?

Skorupi is a good design. There's just very little reason for its eyes to be the weird shapes they are instead of the older style of insect eyes. Something like Ledian's or Beedrill's would fit it well and make it look more coherent with earlier generations.

A similar style of eyes helps tie them together in terms of design. It's not like gen 1 has a limited selection of eyes to choose from. Aside from the kanto angry-eyes, you do have the simple dot eyes like slowpoke and tangela have, the compoundeyes on butterfree and venonat, the smaller button eyes on things like pikachu and clefairy, and the more shiny eyes like on vulpix and eevee.

Eyes are one of the easiest things in a design of characters to keep consistent in order to make them look like they're part of the same world.

How does that contradict what I said? I just pointed out how gen 1 has a wide variety of different eye types, but almost all gen 1 pokemon fall into one of those types.

Newer pokemon games started creating new types of eyes that no old pokemon shared, and made a new standard out of it rather than an odd one-off.

If you put Lillie alongside human characters in the original art style, she would also look weird and out of place.

The trouble is when a ton of new pokemon are just given a new style of eyes. Not because they're something really weird that needs weird eyes, but simply because it's the new art style. Or because they can put more colors on the model, so they decide to give it rainbow eyes for no real reason.

Its more that they removed all the fun goofy elements of the design and made a really bland....thing instead. The person who made this missed the point of the design and removed key elements like the claw marks that would leave foot prints in the snow, the yeti like torso and yellow hair(a reference to real yeti crabs), and then removed details like arm muscles just because. I love crabominable's goofy facial expressions, which they replaced with emotionless blackness.

A new ecosystem does not suddenly mean that eyes have to look wildly different. Especially since a lot of the newer styles of eyes have been consistent over the last few games, which doesn't really lend to the idea that they're all supposed to be a wildly different place.

Expanding on this, I remember hearing a GameFreak person (dont remember who) say that each new region is separate from the last and thus they try to make it more unique. That includes the pokemon.
Natural art style change + desire to make different = new different gen designs.

Whatever their reason for changing the style was, it's better because, again, it provides diversity in eyes, which makes it more accurate to real life. The majority of Pokemon having white triangle eyes with a single dot in the middle would be boring as fuck and you know it.

Everything definitely feels way different then before though, because those are the first generations where the Pokémon are always in 3D. The way that they have to think about designing them is different because now modeling is a key factor.
