Ash gets angry at every villainous thing that happens in XY, he showed passion when it came to training, battles, and stopping Team Flare, and he contemplated his abilities when he felt like he hit a hurdle that he couldn’t pass, like against Viola and Sanpei, and he showed frustration when he felt like he wasn’t there for his Pokémon, during the whole Ash-Greninja thing.
Being overt and goofy all the time isn’t showing “personality” it’s over exaggeration in an attempt for laughs, which is the point of SM since it’s a comedy series.
Compared to XY, SM Ash is extremely one dimensional. He’s always happy and finds joy out if everything and never actually gets frustrated. It wasn’t until the Ula Ula arc that someone pissed him off enough to warrant showing some type of anger.
