On another note though, I wonder how the design philosophy of the UBs came to be. Solgaleo and Lunala, both UBs, are pretty standard looking legendaries, so what happened with the rest of them? Did GF just give no fucks what the rest of the UBs looked like after the box mascots were finished?

It's meant to represent how extremely airlike its non-corporeal head is, like Gastly's purple gas.

Are you being intentionally obtuse? The characters are surprised when Cosmog is speculated to be an Ultra Beast. They're also not marketed as UBs as seen in the TCG which classifies Necrozma as an Ultra Beast but not the Cosmog family. Also the official USUM National Pokedex poster gives UBs and Necrozma a special aura but Solgaleo and Lunala have the same background as every other Pokémon.

It's not that that's even "terrible", anyway. There are a gazillion Pokemon out there, and honestly, most of the Ultra Beasts aren't that different from "regular" Pokemon. Stakataka, Poipole and Naganadel, Pheromosa... they aren't all THAT out there when you really think about it, right?

Plus, it's Pokemon. Variety is the best part about Pokemon. If you don't like them, you can block them out of your brain forever, and no one will complain!

Stadium models were pretty weird as they had little to go off of I imagine. There probably wasn't model sheets and such like today, just the model makers looking at a sprite and the official illustration and doing the best they could.

If anything they really gave life to the models. From their death animations to even just simple attack animations the stadium models really gave pokemon personality. Some weren't that lucky, some of the models made for the original Japan only pokemon stadium are pretty weird and stiff, but by stadium 2 they looked pretty damn good for n64.

Ultra Beasts would be much better if they actually WERE alien. Like, completely warped and bizarre creatures.

Instead they're just monsters that could've been put in another gamefreak game. They don't even have unique typings, you have shit like Bug/Fighting, or Electric.

I don't even mind Volcanion THAT much, but what were they honestly thinking when designing its FACE? Its eyes and eyebrows look ridiculous and its nostrils are ridiculously oversized.
Also, there shouldn't be so much detail on its lower body because it's not possible to see at most angles that are actually relevant (especially since you can't just rotate it in the Pokédex in any game past XY). I can't actually tell what the yellow that's in between its chest and its foreleg in this art is supposed to look like. And the color scheme really doesn't work; I get what they were going for, but it bothers me excessively. And it's just really hard to tell where decisions like… the extra blue triangle on its tail (is that a fin?? but it's not aquatic) or the protrusions on every leg (are those blowholes like on its ring? as far as I can tell from the art, they're closed anyway).
It's unreasonably cluttered, and I rarely agree when people say that about designs because most of them have some semblance of order.

If you actually compare UB's side by side with a lot of legendary pokemon you'll find they are the exact same style and level of detail. The only difference is that the UB's aren't usually furbait and rarely humanlike.

They're what legendaries might have been like if they were ever actually creative and not 99% junk.

Blast+Cephalo. The Japanese name basically means "Head goes boom"
It's a firework clown. The tube for the body splaying out on the top is a mid-explosion firework, complete with the display part as the ghostly head. Said parts also function as the clown's collar and eye makeup.
