There was absolutely no reason for the average view to see all this buildup but still
"expect" Ash to lose, as Ash had never been portrayed as this competent before, nor has gitting gud ever had such focus.
This is why Ash losing was so big a letdown that even the voice actors were complaining about it, everything was setup for Ash to win from a storytelling perspective, if this were any other shonen, Ash would have gotten the clutch victory because Ash fulfilled all the shonen requirements for a training arc.
Saying Ash winning = anime is over is moot point too, the Elite 4 actually exists in the anime, Ash could challenge and job to those guys and it would make much more sense than him losing the league to Mega Shillzard after months and months of hype. The fans were mislead, this is fact.
