The entire line is based on chess pieces in both English and Japanese. The Jap name just uses the name for a Jap chess piece instead of an English chess piece.

Pawniard's Japanese name (Komatana) contains the word "koma", which is the name of a piece in Shogi (Japanese chess). And Bisharp commands a group of Pawniard.

There is no chess pun in any other language. The translators just misinterpreted komatana as a reference to shogi pieces. A kogatana is a small blade and koma is a character for small or fine things, for example komagiru meaning to slice something finely.

It's based on military ranks more so than a literal chess piece. Almost all of its names refer to army commander ranks. It's called Bisharp in English because Pawn can be promoted to a Bishop and a Bishop ranks higher.
