Because his design is 90s and he also doesn't look like he's in his twenties which makes him less marketable, also he has less of a role in the plot than Steven and Cynthia who participated more in the story, even though Lance was more involved in G/S/C. Additionally he was sort of superseded by Gary and Red as the Kanto/Johto elite four/champion representative

His Gold/Silver/Fire/Leaf version looks good as a sprite, but its another size-and-pallet induced design. The casual RBY design was functional, the formal red and navy for HGSS was a really nice surprise.

Yes it has, because he embraces the silly larper look. He's not someone you can just discount as an edgelord, because his teams are legitimately powerful in most games and he's shown actually wrecking shit pretty consistently.

Speaking of Volkner, why was he the only good gym leader in Gen 4? Like ALL of their designs are pretty good, but most of their personalities suck. Having a guy who's just kind of bored because he's stuck without a good challenge but then gets really excited for the serious battle with the player is pretty fun.
The Gen 3 gym leaders were all way more memorable even though they're comparatively one-note with way less interaction.

Dragonite is such a disappointing final evolution in my opinion. It looks completely fucking different than Dratini/Dragonair, a different final evolution like Gallade would be nice.

Clair was the last gym leader and part of his family though, so there was probably a greater risk on infringing upon her unique traits. Also, her team was one of the worst ever as far as Pokemon variety goes, with three Dragonairs and a Kingdra.

Legend of Thunder's trying to color Lance the pretty boy always made me laugh, found him too straightforward for that. But then I would say that about Pokemon as a whole for the first decade. Steven's battle sprite is really confusing, though.

Going hog wild with the Dragonair's weather control and their general fire + water + electric + ice range was neato. Gave Lance something to set him apart that the games couldn't convey so well.

Oh Game Freak did it as early as Yellow. I was just referring to their coming off as designed to be Lance's resist everything and fire everything boss monsters shoved in their for the end game. Seeing the weather thing realized was just a "oh, that's what these guys do in nature" moment.

How old is Steven supposed to be? It was probably because the hair, and also because his actual sprite image on right makes him look a bit older too, but I always figured around 30 or so as well. I usually figure that for most of the adult leader type characters, unless it's obvious they are younger.
