It truly was. It helps that it was also loosely based on an old rejected turtle pokemon. Gen V was the last gen to have any decent designs on par with previous generations. Gen IV and Gen VI really fucked shit up in terms of aesthetics. Only decent mon in those games were pre-evos or evos to oldmon, except Rhyperior which was ugly as shit and mega evos which were just gay.
