The reason is pretty clear. The old maps were able to be more creative with what the map would look like in a more detailed art style than the original sprites while the new ones are just copying how they look in the game

Yeah, reiterating, the RSE map looks like concept art in the functional sense, it is a practical reference but meant to be interpreted in finer details. The ORAS map skips the interpretive phase entirely and approximates the entire game, right down to the arbitrary rock cutoffs in the ocean. It is TOO well laid out, and you notice that even as you try to take in the finer details the artist is using to hide it. I do like the new color pallet.

Aaaaah yes! I love the smeary style for that, and Soaring demanding GF physically model the entire region gave the artist more to embellish. Like "How much landmass in southwest Hoenn are we MISSING? The heck is between Route 123 and Fotree? It has some "when without reference, add forest" going on, but I'll take it.

The Kalos desert has no mountain near it that could reasonably cause a rain shadow effect. It's also surrounded by lush greenery on all sides and even has a fucking river running through it.

I didn't say it would justify them gameplay-wise, but it would more clearly explain what they were going for and that there was an actual concept behind it that goes beyond "we have to put in some filler water routes".
The whole theme of RS is landmass vs. ocean and how expanding either of them beyond its limit leads to the destruction of civilization. So they need to be in balance, like yin and yang.
That central message of the game being expressed through the shape of the map is a pretty cool thought.

Right, yeah, I get that.
And as much as I dislike Hoenn, I'll admit that as far as region design goes its probably the best in the series, and Gen III was probably the best in the series when it came to map art as well.
Still, really wish they improved the water routes if it was such a big focus.

The water routes do feel like Game Freak growing pains; if your handful of large water bodies had 3 Pokemon, then why not all of these? They should have been treasure trove since Hoenn has so many water types and they can fudge what a "fresh water" Pokemon is. But they saved it for diving.

Why does Team Aqua only use Carvahna again? They have a buffet to pick from!
