It is literally the first pokéman game I did not finish until today. I got into some fucking boring ice cave with like one or two pokés and god that sucked

I boot up sun now and I can't let it down, the pacing and the pokés are just better.

always loved Y even if it sometimes interupted your gameplay. every game has some section of railroading, this game wasnt that much worse, and the additional content like pokemon amie and customization was actually pretty fun. SKATING WAS THE BEST THING EVER, the main antagonist was a stand alone, the battle models looked good for the first time trying them. the pokemon selection was pretty tight and they even gave you a free mega pokemon twice in the game to make sure you see the mechanic. fairies were really cool even though they had a very limited movepool and i even used 2 in my first team (klefki and azumarill). the dark and ghost type buff was long needed since steel types legit resisted everything. player search system was pretty nice at the time and i really liked playing battlespot, who can forget wondertrades tho. the gyms had akward spacing but still gave some cool puzzles that incorporated the perspective system in X/Y like the rock gym and the fighting gym. the gyms were a bit boring with the 3 mon structure and honestly the puzzles were unimpressive. they kind of followed a similar problem with the game which was X/Y trying to make good graphic shots and scenes but failing because it wasnt visually impressive. the music was forgettable and the battles were just bashmons, not many trainers had a unique strategy. the level curve is behind you at all times and the pokemon you fight in the wild are always different every route so theres never any hell stretches of annoying pokemon over multiple consecutive routes. the game was pretty linear and didnt feature as much exploring as HG/SS for example, but the central hub was always gaining new things to do and check out. the other towns in comparison felt dull and pretty bland when you consider gen 4 gen 5cities that always had something impactful you needed or could do. dungeons were pretty nice but short and the overworld biomes aesthetic was very emphasized. 8/10 game overall desu.

The guy he was arguing w/ here, I do agree, it rekindled my passion for the series after I got down w/ gen 4, 5, 6.
It is a very good game.

In an unrelated note, should I buy some of the Ultra versions? They are quite expensive here but if they add a LOT to the game I might consider.

I like XY, it isn't a stellar or unique pokemon game, but it was a lot of fun at release with other friends who play pokemon
I feel really bad for people who didn't get to experience the game with a group of friends, battling after gyms and exploring new areas, sharing where new pokemon were, how to evolve doublade, etc.
plus it was generally a step up from gen 5

they're like emerald, platinum but with a postgame episode (a la oras) and a small facility (battle agency) instead of a frontier
lots of little changes along the way, lots of totems are different, poni and onwards is quite different, there are a lot of minigames added and new collectable instead of zygarde cores
while I did prefer emerald and platinum due to their lil postgame islands with so much to do, I appreciate that usum has tried to saturate the game world in small changes
I personally really like the side quests and new beach areas (including a lil cave) added with mantine surf

The storymode game had so many regressions from BW2, which were the best Pokemon games ever, it disappointed a lot of people.
Worse the storyline is basically a remix of RSE with wannabe jrpg backstory. Then we got the actual RSE remix with ORAS. shitty power creep and the first gen to introduce a "gimmick"
overall they're an abombination. gen VI is better off not existing

Don't expect BW2. Most of the combat/content related changes are good but probably should have been included in SM. The story is weaker because they replaced Aether Paradise with UN, but UN is a fantastic boss and character so they should have found a way to integrate him into SM without removing the best part of storymode SM.

I might have just been at the wrong age for it. I grew up playing Gen 3 / 4 and was really hyped for gen 5. BW was disappointing and I barely considered playing the next game

One of my biggest problems with XY was that it actually had too many Pokemon to catch in its pokedex. It felt more like a shitty fan hack in that regard. And the paradox of choice kicked into overdrive for me.

I never fucking hated them and anyone who DID was/is just asshurt about megas or fairy typing. They were a beautiful transition to 3D and had some of the most memorable music in the series as well as great pacing early game (I liked the gyms being spaced out like they were and ending the game in the mid 60s). The only goddamn thing I'm a little pissy about is how megas were distributed in a way that made it pretty damn obvious Gen1 pandering...but it made Charizard relevant after over 10 years of being a meme so I forgive them. I wish every day that we'd get a Z version with the updated human models from S/M but I know it won't fucking happen.

Honestly I thing the real reason is that until now, no one ever played Pokémon game that was truly shit. It wasn't until Sun and Moon that everyone realised that the Pokémon franchise was well and truly going down the drain. Let's all be honest here, there isn't a single Pokémon game that sucks as much as the game series that decided to release the same game twice with only making mild, unimportant changes that really weren't worth anything.

The cutscenes and the frequency of then absolutely ruin the pacing of the game slowing progression to a crawl to pad out what little there is in the game.

I played it. They were games. All I remember is battling at the battle mansion and online. X&Y were the first games I didn't care about the region or what was happening around it, the games looked bland generic. And the ending was dumb.

And yet its my top 3 fav games EASILY. Fantastic region, best regional Pokedex, tons of replay value, non intrusive, Amie, Super training, Chateau, decent characters (read as: not outstanding but also not annoying). Love it
